Product Description

Audiences have always loved the spectacle of tough guys going soft and gooey, and We're No Angels adds the extra sweetener of Yuletide to its mix. The action takes place on Devil's Island, the tropical backwater where the notorious French prison was located. Three convicts, played by Humphrey Bogart, Aldo Ray, and Peter Ustinov, have escaped, and wait only for a ship to leave the next day. In the meantime, they become involved in the financial woes of an island shopkeeper (Leo G. Carroll) and his wife (Joan Bennett) and daughter, whose business is in danger from a rich, nasty relative (Basil Rathbone). Despite the threat of black comedy, especially in the form of a poisonous viper (which Ray carries around in a demure bamboo case), broad cuteness tends to rule the day. While it's not on the list of essential Bogart performances, Bogie does seem to be enjoying himself, and the puckish Ustinov savors his lines like a cow chewing grass. The stage origins of the scenario are all too obvious, and probably contribute to the pokey pacing (Michael Curtiz, who guided Bogart in Casablanca, was perhaps not the ideal choice for this kind of winsome comedy). This 1955 film looks good in comparison to the loose, labored 1989 remake with Robert De Niro and Sean Penn. --Robert Horton

5.0 out of 5 stars Our new Christmas Eve tradition! Jan 18 2012
By Triscia
Format:DVD
This is a movie that my husband and I remember watching many years ago. My brother's family have the DVD and have a practice of watching it together every year on Christmas Eve. This year I decided it was our turn to get our own copy. I found it here with Amazon and ordered it and had it in my hands three days later in plenty of time for Christmas Eve!
This is a delightful movie! The humour is subtle and the script so well written and we thoroughly enjoyed watching it again. It truly is a classic old film with great performances by Humphrey Bogart, Aldo Rey and Peter Ustinov. We highly recommend this to anyone looking for a new edition to their holiday viewing library!

I also can't say enough good things about the excellent service from Amazon and the speed at which the movie arrived at our home! Five stars all around!

5.0 out of 5 stars Bogart doing comedy April 2 2013
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
One of my favourite Bogart films and the family's favourite Christmas ones, it never ceases to fascinate with every viewing. The funny lines, facial expressions (Ustinov's) and situations are subtle and continuous leaving you wanting more. Don't confuse it with the 1980's debacle of a "remake".

5.0 out of 5 stars Oldie But Goodie Feb 23 2013
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Humphrey Bogart, Aldo Ray, and Peter Ustinov are at their best in this old fashioned Bad Guys Really Have Heart film. I love this story of three convicts who show more grace, generosity and brotherly love towards the family they intended to rob than the family's greedy, selfish cousins. The more the cousins of the family play the role of Grinch, the more the convicts display the Spirit of Christmas toward the guileless family. Both cousins get their cum-uppins when they steal, first from one of the convicts, then from each other.

There are tiny bits of white static in the film from its age, which only authenticate it's antiquity.

Amazon's secondary seller grooveyard_ca provided good service - product was well-wrapped and delivery was prompt.
