Product Description

We’re going on a lion hunt. Time to put on your safari hats, says a teacher before leading her class on an exciting imaginary journey. Off they go! They slosh through mud, splish-splash through rivers, swish through grass, and finally come face to face with a lion! Joe Mathieu brings the lion hunt to life with delightful illustrations rendered in Prisma colors, dyes, pen, and ink that add to this classroom fantasy based on a traditional game.

1.0 out of 5 stars Pales In Comparison to the Original April 16 2013

My household is a very very big fan of We're Going on a Bear Hunt. In fact I've often given the pop up version of the book as gifts many many times and it is always a big hit. Always. So when I saw We're going on a Lion Hunt I thought it might be a good addition to our home library.

I was sooo disappointed. The illustrations are fine, though not as captivating as what is in the original version of Bear Hunt. But my biggest disappoint comes from the actual story itself. Many of the phrases in the book are EXACTLY like what is in the Bear Hunt book. To me it seemed more like plagiarism, than "using our imagination" like it states on the first page of the story. I know there have been other spin offs of the original tale, but I'm just surprised that someone can take the words of another author, maybe change a few, give it a new illustration and a copy cat title and try to make money off of it. While I expected the story to be similar I didn't expect it to be so similar. Despite it's similarity, We're Going on a Lion Hunt doesn't capture the same tone as the original Bear Hunt for some reason. The original is catchy and the repetitive phrases are fun. This version falls flat on almost every level.

Overall I would say that this is a very poor version of We Are Going on a Bear Hunt (which is a fabulous story that your little ones will love). My little one was bored with this book, and in the end we are going to donate the book to our library's book sale. It's surprising really how different our reactions were to this book compared to Bear Hunt. You would think that they would be the same since the books are so similar, but unfortunately we just didn't like it. I can't in good conscience recommend We're Going on a Lion Hunt, however I do highly recommend We're Going on a Bear Hunt. Especially the pop up version which is a ton of fun. We're Going on a Bear Hunt: A Celebratory Pop-up Edition I'm giving We're Going on a Lion Hunt one star since I can't give it zero.

My daughter and I love to act out the hand motions and sounds as I read this story. It was a favorite of mine when I was young and am ecstatic to be able to share it with her.

4.0 out of 5 stars Such fun Dec 18 2012

I absolutely love the bear hunt book, so was very excited to find this one. I was a little sad that the run back did not have the sounds (swish, slog, etc.), but that did not ruin my enjoyment of this book. My toddler an I love it, and it is one I don't mind reading over and over again. The rhythm is excellent. I highly recommend this book.
