A bit of retcon never hurt anyone....right?, Aug 17 2009

This story changes a bunch of "Jack Russel's" back story so what you think you know mostly isn't so anymore. It is a MAX title so that's almost to be expected since it has been kind of common with other MAX titles in the past. They don't always stick with what happened in the mainstream Marvel Universe, and often what happens in the MAX titles doesn't happen in the main MU either.
I was reminded of two different stories while reading this. One was the classic appearance of the Werewolf by Night in Moon Knight #29 (one of the earlier volumes) where the werewolf looked more like the creatures in "The Howling" than from "The Wolfman". In that book and in this one there are some similar story elements about people wanting the wolf for their own purposes. The reasons aren't too different but this book gives them a more modern slant and less of a supernatural one. The other similarity is that the wolf is violent and does kill people. The early "Werewolf By Night" books he was kind of like a hairy Hulk in that he never managed to hurt anyone even with all the mayhem he created.
The other story I was reminded of was the BBC series "Jeckyl". The relationship between Jack and the wolf is a bit more like that of Doctor Jeckyl and Mr. Hyde than a man and a monstrous wolf. There are some other elements that vaguely resemble bits from that show but I won't spoil them here.
The artwork is pretty good with an interesting design for the werewolf. I'm rather partial to "The Howling" style werewolves myself since that was new when I was a kid but this version is a more savage and brutal looking version of the classic Wolfman style that the original comic look was based on.

Werewolf by Night: In the Dung, Aug 17 2011

After the success of the Werewolf by Night series in the 1970s, Marvel Max made an attempt at bringing the series back in the form of Werewolf by Night: In the Blood. The 5-issue book involves a man named Jack Russel and his quest to escape an organization wanting to use him for their own benefit! Jack is constantly trying to run away from the organization and his own fuzzy past of his lupine form. Jack is framed for horrific murders that he doesn't know if he committed or not and must rectify himself and find out the identity of a creature he encounters on his journey; another werewolf!
The book also contains issue #18 of the Tomb of Dracula series and issue #15 of the Werewolf by Night series where Jack and Topaz must fight off Dracula while they search for Jack's family history and they get to fight alongside Harker and a descendant of Van Helsing!
The Max version of the Werewolf by Night series is full of blood and foul language but the story isn't half as good as the original series. This new one just seems rushed and no other Marvel characters are present at all. The action was great and the artwork was pretty well done but I just didn't enjoy the story much at all. The inclusion of the Dracula arc of the original Werewolf by Night series was really nice but the Max series was definitely lacking. Stick to the 70's stuff if you want to read Werewolf by Night.
