SATA 6 Gb/s interface - Twice the interface speed with backwards compatibility to legacy SATA standards.

Dual processor - Twice the processing power to maximize performance.

Dynamic Cache - WD's dynamic caching algorithm improves performance in real time by optimizing cache allocation between reads and writes. For example, if there's an overwhelming percentage of read traffic as opposed to write traffic, the drive automatically allocates more cache for read data, which reduces congestion and improves overall drive performance.

WD Certified

NoTouch ramp load technology - The recording head never touches the disk media ensuring significantly less wear to the recording head and media as well as better drive protection in transit.

StableTrac - The motor shaft is secured at both ends to reduce system-induced vibration and stabilize platters for accurate tracking, during read and write operations which enables consistently higher performance.

Desktop / Consumer RAID environments - WD Caviar Black Hard Drives are tested and recommended for use in consumer-type RAID applications. (RAID-0 / RAID-1)*

*Business Critical RAID Environments – WD Caviar Blue Hard Drives are not recommended for and are not warranted for use in RAID environments utilizing Enterprise HBAs and/or expanders and in multi-bay chassis, as they are not designed for, nor tested in, these specific types of RAID applications. For all Business Critical RAID applications, please consider WD's Enterprise Hard Drives that are specifically designed with RAID-specific, time-limited error recovery (TLER), are tested extensively in 24x7 RAID applications, and include features like enhanced RAFF technology and thermal extended burn-in testing.

Upgrading your drive is easy - WD Acronis TrueImage, available as a free download on the WD Support site, enables you to copy all your data to a new drive so you don't have to reinstall your operating system to get all the benefits of a new drive. Note: Bare drive does not include any cables or mounting hardware.

The WD advantage - WD puts our products through extensive Functional Integrity Testing (F.I.T.) prior to any product launch. On average, each new product goes through 600,000 hours of testing. WD also has a detailed Knowledge Base with more than 1,000 helpful articles. You can also call toll-free support 7 days per week in the U.S. and Canada. See the WD Support site for full details.

First of all, let me clarify that I'm talking about WD2002FAEX. As I'm writing this, Amazon shows two reviews on this page, both about other products. They need to fix the software that copies reviews from products to "similar" products because sometimes it does harm. Things written years ago about a 500GB drive may not apply to this newer 2TB drive.

This is not an Advanced Format drive. This means you can add it to a Windows XP machine today and move it to a Windows 7 (or Windows 8) machine later without worrying about running WD's software to align sectors or jumpers or special drivers. Also, because it's less than 2.19TB, no worries about that limit, no need for a special PCI card (WD's current solution) or special drivers (Seagate's solution).

If you want to use this drive in a computer with SATA 2 (3Gbps) ports, you can. You just need to insert a jumper between pins 5 and 6. WD was kind enough to put a clear picture of the jumpers and their numbers right on the disk, but they weren't kind enough to actually include a jumper. Hopefully you have one already lying around.

I have just finished installing it. No big deal. Windows XP SP3, GA-P35C-DS3R (yeah, I know, 4 years old, this is the last upgrade I do to this PC). Insert the jumper, insert the disk in the cage, insert the power and SATA cables, go to Device Manager and make a partition, quick format, that's about it. It works fine, for now.

Since I've only used it for a few minutes so far, I can't say anything about reliability. The equivalent SATA 2 model (WD2001FASS) is quite reliable AFAIK, I have had two of those for a long time.

The drive is quiet. I have a 27.7 GB transfer going on from a WD2001FASS to a WD2002FAEX right now, and I can't hear the drives.

I bought this for my new computer. Installed about 40 games onto it and I still have plenty of room to spare. I've also got my OS on it (windows 8.1) and it boots up quickly. I was considering installing my SSD from my laptop onto the new computer for the OS, but this HD is handling boot-up and read/write very well. The only down-side is it's a little loud for my taste, but I have a Fractal Define R4 with sound dampening material.

Western Digital has always been my go to for hard drives.
They work great and are a reasonable price.

I chose western digital black because I do a lot of editing and it can take a strain on the hdd drive.
