This is an awful product. It's one goal is to store computer material and it couldn't even do that. Mine worked fine for a total of like 2 months then start running extremely slow, wouldn't let me add anything to it, wouldn't let me take anything out. It was basically a paper weight.I spent a solid 3 months dealing with the idiots at customer service which sucked because the return email for their site doesn't work. They finallllllly agreed to replace it and when the replacement came they didn't even include a return slip or address so I had to go out and pay for postage to fix THEIR mistake. I am mostly venting right now, when the hard is running 100% it is great but it doesn't work 100% and dealing with the Western Digital Clowns almost gave me a heart attack from the stress. Don't make my mistake

I've had this WD My Book Essential External Hard Drive for 6 months now and am very pleased with it. This is second WD External Hard Drive I've had and I'm using them both as back up drives for my desktop and as secondary storage drives. The older hard drive is an earlier version of the My Book. I do a lot of photography and the digital images keep mounting up! The drive seems to be fast [I've no way of measuring how it operates] and is virtually silent in operation. I'm using a USB 2 connection to my computer. Other reviewers have criticised the original included software but I can't comment on this as I've always just deleted the software included with external hard drives - I prefer to set up my own back-up schedule. I've deducted a star because there is no power switch so either the unit is on all the time or you have to unplug it to switch it off. Other than that, I've no criticism of the unit. Well recommended.
