Purchased to expand capacity of Shaw Direct HDPVR 630 receiver. Easy to set up and did not delete programming already recorded in the system. The increased capacity was added to the system and new recordings were automatically added next in line to the recordings which were in the pvr menu before the installation. Increased my recording capacity significantly and since it was installed about two months ago has been working flawlessly. Definitely would recomment this product.

I purchased this for my Shaw Direct 630 receiver and it works perfectly. My storage usage went from 43% to 9%. Set up was easy and the drive is very quiet. Well worth every penny.

I can now record over 125 hours of HD programming with this product.

Follow these steps to get it working:

1. Turn off the 8300HD PVR.
2. Unplug the 8300HD PVR.
3. Plug in the Expander.
4. Turn on the Expander.
5. Connect the eSATA cable between the 8300HD PVR and the Expander.
6. Plug in the 8300HD PVR.
7. Wait a minute or two for the PVR to boot up.
8. Power on the 8300HD PVR.
9. You should see a message asking if you want to format the drive. Respond yes.
10. Once the formatting has finished, check your recorded list and then press B to see the percentage of space used. It should now be down to a low number somewhere around 15 or 20 percent. If not, turn off the 8300HD PVR, unplug it, wait a few seconds and then plug it back in to get the PVR to reboot.

I bought 3 of these. I have 2 Telus 6131 hd satellite receivers and also the 9241 pvr unit. These units are the same hardware as Bell's..just with Telus format.
I shut off the power to the receivers, hooked up the DVR expanders, turned on the power. The receivers automatically recognized the hard drives and a message popped up saying the receiver needed to reboot to add the new features. I accepted and receivers were rebooted...becoming PVRs after waiting a fair bit of time for the units to change configurations. The key here is to let the updating do its job even if you think nothing is happening. It has not stalled but will eventually reboot turning your hd receivers into PVRs. All I can say is these hard drives are a bit more expensive but they work...absolutely flawless. I have not yet hooked up to the 9241 unit as I am doing some work on that area of the house. However I don't think I'll have any problems adding more room to the PVR unit either.

From the time I opened the box, to the time I had successfully installed this expander took about 10 minutes. I instantly went from having used up 78% of my recording space to only 15%!

I had, prior to ordering the expander, obtained information from a Shaw Direct tech. rep. by phone call on how to install it for that company's equipment, so for anyone contemplating getting one of these, that would be a good first step, because there are no useful instructions provided in that regard in the box. I expect that may be because the installation procedure may vary somewhat between the different PVRs used by different TV providers.

Works perfectly, very easy to install & runs cool. Rogers Nextbox (in Canada) only works with certain eSATA drives and this is one of them. It is designed to operate inside warm equipment cabinets, whereas many others aren't and often prematurely fail as a result.
FYI: The Nextbox (Cisco - formerly Scientific Atlanta - 8642HD) accepts eSATA drives up to 1.5TB if anyone is wondering what to buy.
Western Digital have proven to me over the years that they are the best.
