Having created an instant classic the previous year with their superlative production of Wuthering Heights, producer Samuel Goldwyn, director William Wyler, and cinematographer Gregg Toland reunited for this classic Western from 1940, which earned Walter Brennan his record-setting third Academy Award. Gary Cooper reportedly hesitated to take his role, knowing that Brennan would likely steal the show with his splendid portrayal of "hanging" lawman Judge Roy Bean, but Wyler persisted and Cooper signed on as the drifter who faces Judge Bean under the false accusation of stealing a horse. Cooper smooth-talks his way out of his hanging by claiming to be a close friend of stage star Lily Langtry, with whom the judge is unabashedly smitten, but tensions rise when Cooper comes to the defense of a group of struggling homesteaders that Brennan is trying to drive away. This leads, of course, to a classic showdown in true Western tradition, and under Wyler's able direction The Westerner takes its place among the finest examples of the genre. And while Brennan does indeed steal the show, Cooper needn't have worried--he's every bit the hero in a battle with one of the silver screen's most memorable villains. --Jeff Shannon

Review

You don't have to love, or even like Westerns to love William Wyler's The Westerner -- to appreciate it, all one has to do is appreciate great directing and superb acting, and gorgeous cinematography. The directing is by William Wyler, who took the opportunity afforded by a great script, mixing drama and wit in equal measures, to make one of the most beautifully restrained films seen in the Western genre since the advent of talking pictures. The Westerner is such a quiet movie, its performances so low-key that it is almost a genre-destroying effort -- even John Ford's Stagecoach, made the year before, is so extroverted in its sensibilities as to look almost crude by comparison. There's a psychological darkness that hangs over the action and characterizations in The Westerner that made it much more serious viewing than even Stagecoach had seemed, though it also possesses a great deal of humor -- also much more so than Stagecoach. Wyler, who had rushed through the making of Westerns during the silent era, decided to show the world what could be done with a carefully made Western, done with restraint and an eye for quality in the performances and photography. He was aided and abetted in this goal by producer Samuel Goldwyn, who only made quality pictures -- and who believed any movie worth making by him was worth making well -- and by his two leads, Gary Cooper and Walter Brennan. Cooper could always be relied upon to under-act -- it was part of his charm -- but Brennan was the real miracle here, his acting so internalized and natural that his every breath and every flick of an eye-lid is riveting. It is impossible not to believe completely in his Judge Roy Bean's warped sense of justice, his obsession with Lily Langtry, and his sudden, hopeful (yet erroneous) recognition of Cooper's Cole Hardin as a kindred spirit -- or his sense of betrayal when Hardin rides away, declining his offer to join the judge in his larcenous activities. Indeed, the script and the movie offer as complex a relationship between two men as any movie of its era. Cooper's character is convincingly wary yet respectful of Brennan's Judge Bean, and sees some sign in the corrupt, murderous judge of something potentially decent; Hardin is also compelled to save the judge from a lynching party, even knocking him out cold for his own good. In many respects, this was the first modern buddy movie, paralleling elements of Each Dawn I Die, and its relationship between the James Cagney and George Raft characters. The scene in which Hardin pulls out the long-awaited lock of Lily Langtry's hair is played so beautifully and carried so long that it's humorous in what it says about filmmaking. Cooper may crack Brennan's neck once too often for the joke to work, but the movie still manages to maintain a careful balance between humor and seriousness throughout. Alfred Newman's score (credited to Dimitri Tiomkin) is nicely restrained until the sentimental finale, where the composer can indulge his most romantic impulses, such as scoring the scene of the dying judge going to meet Miss Langtry to "The Unquiet Grave" (also known as "Dives and Lazarus," or "Diverus and Lazarus"), with "Dixie" accompanying his actual demise, in keeping with the old dress uniform she is wearing from better days. And the photography by Gregg Toland is filled with gorgeously lit and composed shots, interiors and exteriors alike, making this movie 100 minutes well spent for the eye as well -- what's more, Wyler's directing and Toland's shooting of the prairie fire sequence is one of the great spectacles of 1930s cinema, as well as an incredibly exciting scene. ~ Bruce Eder, All Movie Guide

4.0étoiles sur 5 The Westerner, Mars 22 2009

A very young Gary Cooper plays his usual understated hero role the way only Cooper can. In this role he adds a touch of rascality to the character which is unusual for him and makes his character all the more human. Walter Brennan puts on a wonderful performance as the scoundrel Judge Roy Bean. Forest Tucker is in here too in a support role. A good 'old style' Western. If you like 'em you can't really go wrong with Gary Cooper. I recommend it.

(TOP 50 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
United Artists presents "THE WESTERNER" (20 September 1940) (100 mins/B&W) (Dolby digitally remastered) -- Our story line and plot, If you like westerns, you'll love William Wyler's "The Westerner" -- great directing and superb acting, and gorgeous cinematography --- Cole Hardin (Gary Cooper) just doesn't look like a horse thief, Jane-Ellen Matthews (Doris Davenport) tells Judge Roy Bean (Walter Brennan) as she steps up to the bar --- Cole says he can't take it with him as he empties all of his coins on the bar to buy drinks for the jury --- Cooper notices two big pictures of Lily Langtry behind the bar --- Sure, Cole has met the Jersey Lily, whom the hanging judge adores, even has a lock of her hair --- Hanging is delayed for two weeks, giving Cole time to get in the middle of a range war between cattlemen and homesteaders and to still be around when Lily Langtry, former mistress of Edward VII who became an international actress, arrives in Texas --- Great to see some of my favorite B-Western character actors in the cast Dana Andrews, Stanley Andrews, Hank Bell, Forrest Tucker, Tom Tyler and Chill Wills --- Wyler's directing and Toland's shooting of the prairie fire sequence is one of the great spectacles of 1930s cinema, as well as an incredibly exciting scene --- Walter Brennan won his third Best Supporting Actor Oscar with this film. This was the fifth year the Supporting Player categories were being awarded by the Academy and Brennan won numbers one and three previously --- What makes the film even better is that it is based on a person who actually lived, which made the role even more challenging --- Walter Brennan carries this oater and transforms what would have otherwise been just another western into a classic.

5.0étoiles sur 5 Cooper cracks necks with the best of em', Déc 18 2002
Par Maddox (United States) - Voir tous mes commentaires
This review is from: The Westerner (VHS Tape)
The Westerner is simply one of the best westerns ever made. It has all of the elements of the genre, the lonesome drifter (Cooper), the half-evil judge (Brennan as Judge Roy Bean), the "searching-for-a-real-man" women, the gang of thug rustlers (played by a gang of various thugs), the wimpy farmers (played by a bunch of wimpy farmers), the raunchy bar-room singer (played by a lock of golden hair), and the climatic shoot-out (Cooper versus Brennan). The scenes that steal the movie are those in which Cooper kindly agress to gently crack Judge Roy Beans stiff neck with a quick twist. You can hear the pops and also feel the relief as you watch.
