Paul Quarrington's comedy-drama takes its inspiration from the life story of Beach Boys' leader Brian Wilson. The appropriately named Desmond Howl (Maury Chaykin) grows reclusive and eccentric after the devastating death of his brother/bandmate some years before. No longer interested in his successful career, he gives up the spotlight to devote himself to a curious musical obsession: composing a symphony for whales. However, his self-imposed isolation is disturbed by a beautiful runaway teen (Cynthia Preston) who shows up at his mansion uninvited. Whale Music has good performances, smart dialogue and effective mood and tunes (supplied by the Rheostatics) but the plot fumbles around at times, seemingly relying on Preston's scantily-clad form to carry it over the slow spots. --D.K. Latta

5.0 out of 5 stars Whale Music - There are second chances, even for lost causes, Aug 24 2004

This review is from: Whale Music (VHS Tape)
Very simply put, Whale Music is a wonderful film. The acting is great by both the two leads, Maury Chaykin and Cynthia Preston, and by all the grat supporting cast, a veritable who's who of Canadian film and TV. The plot is about redemption; for those feeling lost, either in society or in themselves, there can always be a second chance at happiness. The movie is quite hopeful in that regard.

The reviewer D.K. Latta has given a good description of how the movie begins. And Latta's summary overall is quite accurate; the acting is great, the music is great, the story line and themes are wonderful and inspiring. I only disagree with Latta's comment that the "plot fumbles around... seemingly relying on Preston's scantily-clad form to carry it over the slow spots".

The plot doesn't fumble around. It is about two people, learning to trust again, learning about eachother, and learning, or relearning, how to live. There are moments of tension, there are moments of blissful happiness, there are moments of general silliness. In other words, life. Now I grant that in real life these moments tend to happen over days, weeks or months, but when you only have 90+ minutes to tell a story you can really only show the highlights.

The movie inspires and redeems not only the characters, but also the audience. We are getting a ringside seat to two peoples worlds that have collided, a view that most might never have a chance to see. Voyouerism(sp) aside when it comes to the scantiliy clad, it's a very enjoyable film from start to finish, top to bottom.

Rush out in a buying/renting frenzy and see this film. Now if we could just get this on DVD, all would be well.
