Where Sin Abounds, Grace Abounds More,
By Ian Gordon Malcomson (Victoria, BC) - See all my reviews (HALL OF FAME) (TOP 10 REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: What Good Is God?: In Search of a Faith That Matters (Hardcover)
I have always found Yancey's brand of Christian faith, as reflected in his many writings, to be real and dynamic. His latest commentary, "What Good is God", has plenty of useful points to make about our need for God's nurturing and preserving grace in times of trouble. Like his many other books on Christian living, Yancy, ever the enthusiastic apologist, expresses a considerable appreciation of how a personal trust in God works in a world beyond the walls of the conventional church. With each encounter with God in the public square, Yancy finds a gracious Father who is prepared to care for a suffering humanity in the most unique and miraculous ways. It is only through the actions of individuals living out the fruits of God's unmerited grace in their lives that Christianity really has any practical purpose. This book is full of personal stories where those special acts of intervening grace amidst the encircling gloom of humanity's brokenness made the difference. The power of grace that emerges from such awful and painful tragedies as the Mumbai terrorist scene, the Virginia Tech shooting, Yancy's own brush with death, the assassination of Martin Luther King, and many events leaves us with only one of two choices: be transformed by it or continue to doubt its claim. Grace, from Yancy's perspective, works best under fire when it is God-focused and not curtailed by man-made petty rules and regulations. I recommend this book to anyone who is looking to break out in their Christian life with a fresh understanding of how God's grace transforms lives. God can do amazing things with broken and submissive people.

What Good Is God?,
This review is from: What Good Is God?: In Search of a Faith That Matters (Hardcover)
WHAT GOOD IS GOD - by Philip YanceyHaving just finished this easy to read book, I can say that God is indeed good! I knew that before I began reading this book, but to read about the ways that God is working across our world, and in the most unlikely places, is truly amazing! Christianity is thriving in the Middle East, Africa, China, where it is is forbidden, yet in the West where we have freedom of choice there is a decline in Christianity. God has placed in people's heart, the compassion to help others unconditionally, like in the inner cities where there is povertry, drugs and prostitution. He has placed in people's heart the desire to make change in society, by peaceful means like Martin Luther King. He has placed in people's heart the desire to comfort others after having been through similar tragedies and survived, like in mass school shootings. This book gives us great examples and encouragement of how we can each help other through the pain that life sometimes throws at us. Through God's power we can overcome the evils that we face. Mr. Yancey has definitely accomplished his goal of searching for faith that matters! I have read other books by this author and I am never disappointed.

Yancey has a way of simplicity in the complex. You will be taken to places and situations that tug at your being, coming away differently than when you began.
