Product Description

From Amazon.co.uk

Hot on the heels of their shock UK No. 1 single "I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor", Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not confirms Sheffield's Arctic Monkeys as the UK underground's most proselytizing young preachers of the DIY gospel. Marrying nervy, caffeine-and-cigarettes indie clatter to conversational, pretense-free lyrics and the occasional burst of off-the-cuff eloquence ("No time for Montagues or Capulets/Just banging tunes and DJ sets," proffers "Dancefloor"), it's an instant, pulse-racing hit.

No question, the Monkeys are more sinners than saints. The opening "The View from the Afternoon" predicts a ruckus with a whole lot more grit than the Kaisers can muster, while on the mellow "Riot Van," a tale of underage drinking and cop-baiting culminates in a messy beating in the back of a station wagon. Look beyond the Arctics' bristly, laddish exterior, however, because it's actually affairs of the heart that comprise this album's secret core: see the sweaty-palmed "Dancing Shoes," bearing testament to the trial of nerves that is pulling in a suburban indie nightclub, or "Mardy Bum"--a tribute to a moody girlfriend that, for all its witty barbs ("I've seen your frown and it's like looking down the barrel of a gun"), is tinted with sweet affection. --Louis Pattison

5.0 out of 5 stars Great album!, Sep 2 2007
By Some guy (Ottawa Canada) - See all my reviews
I think this is a great album, even though it may take a couple of listens to fully appreciate the band. I count this album among some of the best ever made!

2.0 out of 5 stars Hot Hot Heat, Futureheads, Arctic Monkeys, Mar 16 2006
By Un-fanclub (Toronto) - See all my reviews
After way too many listens to this record, it's in my "to sell" pile. I find the music so uninteresting, and without edge, that I can't even begin to appreciate the apparently morrissey-esque lyrics.

As a fan of "post-punk" music in general (the original and neo) - I like this about as much as the Futureheads and Hot Hot Heat - all of which had ridiculous hype on their side (ie: not very much). It ain't no Franz Ferdinand, which to my surprise, did live up to the hype.

If time is money, I'd spend it listening to the Rakes (Capture/Release) or Editors (The Back Room) instead. I knew nothing about either band before getting the cds, but was very surprised by how good they were. The Rakes are moderately Hives-ish, while the Editors are Doves/Interpol-ish.

3.0 out of 5 stars Keep it civil please, Mar 14 2006
By Grinder (Toronto) - See all my reviews
My Two Cents,
as much as "Send Them to the Arctic" opened himself up to your attack with his biting tone, and yes, he may have deserved your slap, this is not some cheesie internet blog. This is a music review site. Let's keep it to the music please. Thanks.

Me, kinda surprised by the album. Usually, the hype machine does camelflouge the product, but I thought it was a smart effort. Hate the whole angst/Strokes posing, but at least the Brits still like there rock and roll with some guitar in it. Thumbs up.
