From School Library Journal
In the days before Noah's flood, whales were land creatures who pretended to be hills and swallowed unsuspecting people. In this version of the story, whales Walt and Wisteria hate water and try to board the ark to escape the flood. When there is no room for them, they accidently discover that they enjoy life in the sea and make the water their permanent home. Bloomfield's illustrations have a primitive, scumbled quality, which makes them hard to use with a group and which gives a gloomy atmosphere, somewhat at odds with McAllister's intended humor. Neither text nor illustration offers a compelling reason to purchase this slight tale. --Kathy Piehl, Mankato State University, MN
