Product Description

Miss Linnet Berry Thrynne is a Beauty . . . Naturally, she's betrothed to a Beast.

Piers Yelverton, Earl of Marchant, lives in a castle in Wales where, it is rumored, his bad temper flays everyone he crosses. And rumor also has it that a wound has left the earl immune to the charms of any woman.

Linnet is not just any woman.

She is more than merely lovely: her wit and charm brought a prince to his knees. She estimates the earl will fall madly in love—in just two weeks.

Yet Linnet has no idea of the danger posed to her own heart by a man who may never love her in return.

If she decides to be very wicked indeed . . . what price will she pay for taming his wild heart?

5.0 out of 5 stars Greatly entertaining., Mar 31 2011
This review is from: When Beauty Tamed The Beast (Mass Market Paperback)
I wasn't sure I wanted to read this book because I was so disappointed in her last novel "A Kiss at Midnight" but I am glad I did. This is typical of Eloisa's great writing so if you've enjoyed her books before you will enjoy this one.

The witty sarcastic banter and insightfulness of the two main characters was enough to entertain throughout the book. Add to that some romantic dalliance and it made my heart sing.

I wish I did not know that the male lead was based on House (TV show character) because at times I would imagine him in the role and that would ruin the image of the hunky character I had portrayed for the lead in my fantasy mind.

It's a light lovely story and an effortless read. Quite enjoyable.

This review is from: When Beauty Tamed The Beast (Mass Market Paperback)
Revisiting the classic tale of "La belle et la bête" is not exactly the most original idea in the romance kingdom. But in this book, it is executed very well, with a feisty heroine, unfairly thrown away to the beast to salvage what is left of her reputation, and a rather interesting hero.

Lynette is a beautiful young girl, who has had a season and was courted by a prince. Unfortunately, the expression wardrobe malfunction becomes euphemistic for the effects it has on Lynette's reputation when it is unfairly rumoured that she has become pregnant from dallying from the Prince. Because marriage won't ensue, Lynette is disgraced, and her future seems bleak. Her father and aunt decide to salvage the situation by using the rumour to help Lynette's prospects by arranging a betrothal with the father of the extravagant Earl of Yelverton, Piers Marchant. The father, whose duchy will be handed down to his son, despairs of his son having an heir because, not only is Piers crippled, gifted with a beastly temper and an unconventional doctor, he is also rumoured to be impotent. Lynette is the answer to his prayers, if only she can tame the beast.

First of all, the plot takes a bit of a backseat at times to the medical details, the characterisation, and the banter between the characters. The emotional conflict is maintained throughout but a little weak after the big plot climax, so it could have been plotted tighter. The secondary characters are charming and provide an amusing backdrop to to Lynette and Piers's interaction. I really enjoyed the resolution of the secondary romantic plot within the book. I would be interested in reading a book about Piers' cousin, because he seemed interesting.

But one thing that could have been done better is that you can't read this book and not think of House MD, even if you haven't watched the show. There are too many similarities, unconventional, arrogant, brilliant man with a crippled leg. There might be more than that, but I don't watch the show. At the end of the book, the author acknowledges that she used the TV character to draw a few parallels, so that's perfectly out in the open, but at a few moments in the story, it distracted me. I would have liked the hero to be a little more his own personality, instead of having to make the inescapable comparison.

Another thing that removed a little from my enjoyment of the book was the climax is a little melodramatic, and would have benefitted from a tighter timing, the true climax happens and then one lesser issue is raised but then kind of magically resolved. I understand the purpose of it, but it wasn't well executed. It either shouldn't have been raised, or it should have had real impacts to be overcome in a more meaningful manner.

All in all, this is a very good book, there is enough romance for it to be a good romance, but despite the flaws I pointed out, the history of medicine tidbits are well used and they make the book interesting on different levels, Piers and Lynette have a sense of humour that carries the tale when the emotional conflict seems to waver.

5.0 out of 5 stars I can't believe she made me cry!, Jan 25 2011
By Daisy - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: When Beauty Tamed The Beast (Mass Market Paperback)
I didn't expect any more of this novel than a fun retelling of the fairy story, some good dialogue, the usual enjoyable Eloisa James romp. It was all that and a bit more. I have no intention of giving away any of the story but I had a vision at one point when I was sniveling with the poignancy of the moment of Eloisa James as Kathleen Turner at the beginning of the movie after Romancing the Stone where she's writing the last chapter of her romance novel and sobbing over her typewriter. What can I say, they seem like real people whom the author cares about. I think it's her best yet. (And of course they don't live UNhappily ever after)

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy it. Period., Feb 6 2011

I'm an Eloisa James fan anyway but I think this is her best yet. At first I was a little iffy because the first chapter of the book basically just describes how beautiful and perfect Linnet, the heroine, is. However, that skepticism was soon replaced with anticipation of what was going to happen to her. I laughed at Piers' temper tantrums that usually involved funny little insults to his butler, etc. I felt both Linnet's and Piers' feelings of desperation in various parts of the novel. I greatly admired and hated Piers for his dedication to his work. I could go on and on about how emotionally involved I was in this book but to put it simply if you like historical romance you should read this and reread this.

This is honestly my new favorite book. I read it really quickly and regret it because I am now wanting more. I liked "A Kiss at Midnight" but this is exponentially better. I've read 10 books by Eloisa but this one takes the cake.

4.0 out of 5 stars What an emotional roller coaster, but I want to go again!, Jan 25 2011
By Judith Anne - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: When Beauty Tamed The Beast (Mass Market Paperback)
I read the excerpt for this novel online and was ready to be charmed by the book, but I had no idea I would fall in love with two wonderfully written characters. I won't go into a story plot outline, that can be found everywhere, but I will suffice to say I enjoyed the witty dialogue and medical "hospital" setting. Piers, the Beast, is a 19th century Dr. House with a closet of skeletons to deal with, a Welsh Castle full of sick people, a double-dipping butler and an unwanted fiancee', Linnet, the Beauty. Add into the mix his long estranged father, the Duke- his mother, whom the Duke divorced - and many persons with various maladies, plus other doctors in residence studying with Piers and you have a book full of fun!
Piers and Linnet (an intelligent beauty) verbally spar from the first moment, a writing tool when done correctly is enjoyable, but here it is sublime. It is a romance with the requisite amount of hot love scenes, but it is also funny and sweet and well done. I enjoyed the ending, since I always like epilogues that give me a glimpse into the future lives of the characters.

SPOILER****

E. James names two of the doctors studying with Piers at his castle hospital Kibbles and Bitts...LOL.
