Additional Features

With the proliferation of so many lackluster deleted scenes on DVDs, it's nice to see something on this DVD that's worth watching. The seven scenes gathered here all have good laughs and could have easily been included in the film. Highlights of the 35-minute documentary (produced in 2000) include the genesis of the film (director Reiner's return to dating after years of marriage) and the deconstruction of many of the movie's best moments. New and old interviews are included, with Reiner, writer Nora Ephron, and Billy Crystal taking center stage. Lifelong friends Crystal and Reiner should have done the commentary together--Reiner's monotone delivery doesn't work against the lively comedy. Besides, the juiciest facts have been covered in the documentary. Also, Barry Sonnefeld's cinematography is a real treat to view in the widescreen format. --Doug Thomas

Amazon.com Essential Video

Nora Ephron wrote the brisk screenplay for this 1989 romantic comedy, director Rob Reiner made a nicely glossy New York story (very much in a Woody Allen vein) out of it, and Billy Crystal's unstoppable charm made it something really special. Crystal and Meg Ryan play longtime platonic friends who keep dancing around their deeper feelings for one another, and Bruno Kirby and Carrie Fisher are their respective pals who fall in love and get married. Ryan doesn't get a lot of funny material, but her performance is typically alive and intuitive, and she more than holds her own with Crystal's comic motor mouth and sweet sentimentality. Reiner is on comfortable ground, liberated from the burden of making serious statements in the lead-footed manner of subsequent features. --Tom Keogh

This review is from: When Harry Met Sally (DVD)
I love this movie!! So funny, a classic. My only complaint is that the paper case the movie came in was torn and wrinkled - probably a problem with packaging.
But yeah. Great movie. the special features were great too!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!, Aug 26 2008
When I first saw this movie I was speachless... today... still speachless. The chemistry between Harry & Sally is simply irresistable! Great movie about men & women relashionships.

3.0 out of 5 stars Widescreen? Yeah, right !, July 8 2002

Okay. I'm gettin' real peeved. Yet another MGM release under false pretenses. First of all, let me say that this is a very good movie...that's why I bought the DVD. But then, as I have before with many other MGM DVDs, I was greatly disappointed. This is another full-screen version with the black bars added to give the illusion of widescreen...Why does the studio continue to do this? My thinking is that it's a whole lot cheaper to digitally impose black bars on the screen rather than dig up the original widescreen transfer. Just take the more common full-screen edition, add black bars, and sell it to the public as widescreen...[they] won't know the difference.
They're ripping you off, people.
