I needed to put my two cents worth in here about this Import Single. The track "When I Grow Up" is fantastic enough on it's own to warrant buying this disc. This track encompasses a variety of musical styles to produce an appealing blend of pop and hard-edge alternative. The track that steals the show in my opinion, is the B-side Tornado. The song is far different than anything that they have previously attempted, the closest being "Alien Sex Fiend" which appeared on several imports for the "Stupid Girl" single released a while back. The song is a whirlwind of electronica; a bevy of sounds laced together to produce one of the more interesting electronic based dance tracks I've heard in quite some time. Throw in some guitar riffs and a steady beat and you have the making for one of the most diverse tracks in their catalogue. The Danny Teneglia remix of "Special" is a stripped down, beautifully mellow version that allows the listener to focus more on the vocal stylings of Shirley set to a simple, yet powerful bass generated rythym. But don't take my word for it, I had this CD played a local club recently with tremendous success. So much so, it's been requested each weekend since.

"When I Grow Up" is a fast song that you think is a shiny happy people type song but it's really much more. The title recalls the Beach Boys (again the Brian Wilson influence!) song of the same name but instead of the singer talking about growing up and settling down to marriage, Garbage's "When I grow up" sounds more like the singer hopes that "growing up" means a liberation toward sanity and empowerment ("When I grow up I'll be stable/ when I grow up I'll turn the tables"). The singer's life is moving by very quickly from unprotected sex to pregnancy and eventually losing one's mind in a giant juggernaut. The song features outstanding vocals and rapid fire beats. I'm very glad they made this song a single.

I just wanna say that I absolutely LOVE Garbage, and I adore both of their albums.
However, this single was just totally disappointing. When I Grow Up is a great song, but it's the only great song on the single. "Tornado" is seriously the worst Garbage song I have ever heard. I didn't think it was possible to write a bad Garbage song. The "Special" remix didn't do anything for me either, it bored me after a while.
Only get this single if you collect Garbage stuff, because unless you are a MEGA fan, it's just not worth it, and you're better off buying the "Special" single so that you can hear a REAL Garbage B-Side.

I bought this cd because I needed the Rickidy Raw remix of Special. I already have Special on Version 2.0 and Tornado on a B-Sides cd I've got. It's worth the money for that one song. It sounds so good when it's slow like that. And the way that they made it sound like there are two Shirley's singing is amazing. I know that some other people who reviewed this single said they didn't care for Tornado. I personally like it. It's very fast and fun. It may not be classic Garbage but it's still good. My advice would be to buy this single for the remix of Special, even if you're not a fan of Tornadoor When I Grow Up, which is also a wonderful song.
