Years after the 1990s, the decade will be remembered for the rise of pianist-vocalist Diana Krall. Simply put, this British Columbian-born artist is one of the most engaging musicians to emerge from the heap of scat-happy singers high on pyrotechnics, but short on poetry. Stamped with the imprimatur of the Nat King Cole trio and blessed by her apprenticeship with the late West Coast piano giant Jimmy Rowles, Krall simply sings songs the way they're supposed to be sung: with devotion to the lyric and with attention to the groove. This CD finds Krall in familiar company with compatriots Russell Malone (on guitar), bassist John Clayton, drummers Lewis Nash and Jeff Hamilton, and vibraphonist (and former Bill Evans associate) Larry Bunker--all supported by Johnny Mandel's svelte string arrangements. Krall and crew take Irving Berlin's chestnut "Let's Face the Music and Dance" and the Sinatra-signatured "I've Got You Under My Skin" south to Brazil via a sexy bossa nova. Malone's lush guitar accompaniment complements Krall's heartfelt delivery on "When I Look in Your Eyes", and Michael Franks's "Popsicle Toes" dances courtesy of Hamilton's drum work. "Devil May Care", "East of the Sun (and West of the Moon)", The Best Thing for You", and the stridish "I Can't Give You Anything but Love" groove with a minimum of waste, while Mandel's simpatico strings steal the show on "I'll String Along with You", "Pick Yourself Up", and "Do It Again". All of which further illuminate the cool fire from this fine gift from North of the Border. --Eugene Holley Jr.

This CD covers a repertoire of unforgettable classic melodies by the most brilliant songwriters of yesterday and today such as, George Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, Jerome Kern, Harry Warren/Al Dublin, and Ted Koehler/Harold Arlen. Likewise, Michael Franks and a budding songwriter Clint Eastwood, among many others.
My top favorite is "Let's Face The Music And Dance," which she delivers par excellence. With its Bossa Nova style and superb orchestration, it's the best interpretation I've ever heard. Other standouts are "I've Got You Under My Skin," "I'll String Along With You," "East Of The Sun (West Of The Moon)," "Let's Fall In Love," "I Can't Give You Anything But Love," "Pick Yourself Up," and of course "Popsicle Toes" (How can I not remember this song when I was a huge fan of Michael Franks in the eighties?) I have collected a number of his albums since "Art of Tea."
This CD is a treasure and the more you listen to it, the more enjoyable your listening experience will be.
Again, the songs were chosen from the Great American songbook. Many of the songs were originally American hits in the twenties and thirties, including Let's face the music and dance (Fred Astaire), Devil may care (Glenn Miller), Let's fall in love (Eddy Duchin), When I look in your eyes (Hunter Rodeheaver and Virginia Asher), I've got you under my skin (Ray Noble), I can't give you anything but love (Cliff Edwards, Ben Selvin and Johnny Hamp all had huge hits with it), I'll string along with you (Ted Fio Rito), East of the sun (Tom Coakley), Pick yourself up (Fred Astaire) and Do it again (Paul Whiteman).
Some of these songs, like Let's face the music and dance, were originally more up-tempo, but here they are slowed right down, making them sound fresh and exciting. The original artists are mostly unknown these days - only Glenn Miller and Fred Astaire remain widely recognisable - but Diana and others are doing an excellent job of keeping their music alive and relevant to a modern generation.
Krall treaded dangerous grounds by going up against the giants who originally performed these standards. Unfortunately, in comparison, she doesn't bring anything new or better to the table. Her vocal competence is not challenged here. Indeed, Krall is technically proficient. Hints of Carmen McCrae waft about during play but what is lacking is the obvious emotion and distinction that made the originals so appealing. Some tracks are sterile of the oozing passions that have made standards standards.
And where is Nelson Riddle when you need him? The CD suffers from an underwhelming lack of orchestral production that, nearly on its own, lifted Linda Ronstadt's classic standards album to lofty heights. Only the final cut "Why Should I Care?", my favorite on the CD, makes an attempt at full-on orchestration that is so needed but missing from this collection.
Perhaps if Ms. Krall finds a good writer or even writes her own material and combines that with good arrangement and a big band, she could easily meet the hype that seems to surround her.
