Maggie Stovall is trapped inside a person she's spent years carefully crafting. Now the truth about who she is-and what she's done-is bursting to the surface and sending Maggie into a spiral of despair. Will Maggie walk away from her ten-year marriage and her responsibility as a foster mother in her desperate desire to escape the mantle of depression that is cloaking her? Or will she allow God to take her to a place of ultimate honesty-before it's too late? When Joy Came to Stay is the heart-wrenching story of one woman's escape from the shadows of clinical depression. Bestselling author Karen Kingsbury offers this moving tale of the quest for a simple, transparent life lived in the sunlight of God's favor and forgiveness.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful story, great characters Dec 11 2007
Format:Paperback
When Joy Came to Stay is a great novel. I absolutely adored the characters, the storyline was solid, and the actions of the characters was for the most part realistic. The beginning of the novel starts off slowly, with Maggie checking herself into a mental health center. This was the only part I didn't really understand. However, Karen Kingsbury does a fantastic job portraying the viewpoint of a severely depressed person. The only thing I didn't like about the novel as a whole was that the plot seemed to move slowly at times, especially when the next event was thoroughly predictible. I would find myself skimming whole pages just to get to what was happening next. However, overall, this book was very good, pulled at my heartstrings, and was a joy to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Book Dec 23 2003
By lor369
Format:Paperback
This book did a really good job of dealing with 2 issues: 1. The foster care system and 2. Depression and the masks that people hide behind to hide their problems. The book described
how flawed the foster care system is in allowing abusive people be foster parents and how some kids are shuffled from home to
home, as Amanda was. The book also dealt sensitively with the subject of depression. The book talked about how depression
is not a weakness, but how depression can be caused by years of stress, as Maggie was under with her secret about her baby.
The book also mentioned that for some people, that medication can be an answer to prayer. Maggie was thinking that good
Christians didn't get depressed and was afraid of what people would think of her, yet, as she learned through her treatment
program, that is not the case.
