Book Description

Feb 14 2008
According to a World Health Organization Fact Sheet, among women ages 15-44, violence accounts for more death and disability than the combined effects of cancer, malaria, traffic injuries and war. "When Love Hurts" was first published in 2000, it was designed to help women recognize the signs of abuse in a relationship and the abusive strategies their partner uses to control and dis empower them. It also provides tools on what to do if a woman is experiencing abuse. The first edition sold over 11,000 copies outside of standard trade channels, largely through world of mouth. Along with stories of women who have experienced many forms of abuse, "When Love Hurts" also offers exercises that allow readers to make their own decisions about their lives, or to understand what a friend or family member may be going through. An important resource, this second edition includes updates, new exercises to help women understand what they are experiencing, information on Internet usage and a much-requested chapter on grief and the healing process. The book explores difficult questions and offers straightforward, real world advice about an epidemic problem in society - and one that women often keep silent about.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book Mar 22 2012

The authors are extremely knowledgeable & compassionate. This book educates, empowers & heals. For one thing, women who have experienced abuse are blamed, directly & indirectly. (Example: women are told they should stand up to the abuser.) Whereas this book puts the responsibility squarely where it belongs: on the abuser. The problem is his behavior. He needs to stop abusing. Finally, I can relate the Cycle of Abuse to my own situation. The "honeymoon phase" wasn't about romance, flowers & chocolates. It was when things SEEMED "normal," SEEMED peaceful (the lull before the storm). It kept me hooked. I now understand why it was impossible to have a marriage RELATIONSHIP, when he was not interested in a relationship. He wanted power & control. He believed he was central, superior & deserving. That made me peripheral, inferior & serving. The authors give other women's stories, which are immensely helpful. Any woman who has experienced abuse & reads this book will discover how courageous & resilient she is. I am so impressed with this book that I ordered 7 copies for other women who have experienced abuse.

5.0 out of 5 stars Review for When Love Hurts July 11 2011

Domestic violence is often shrouded in secrecy and shame. Karen McAndless-Davis and Jill Cory bring compassion and insight into this difficult family situation. Their book offers commonsense advice and explains patterns of abuse that help women understand what they can do to better protect themselves.
The authors use their years of experience counseling women to outline what happens in dysfunctional relationships and how to identify choices a woman still has. The workbook is interactive and helps women organize their thoughts amid chaos. Particularly interesting is the graphic explaining the process of healing emotions and how victims of abuse constantly cycle between rebuilding and grieving.

In working with domestic violence this is a vital resource! Or if you or someone you love is going through an abusive situation or relationship-this is an important book to plow through. Even those who believe that they are "trained" in this field will receive new information and helpful understanding. A must read for all involved.
