Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

Phillips, a Washington, D.C., therapist, explains that "The Troops" are the multiple personalitiesapproximately 80 men and womenof the pseudonymous Truddi Chase, who first consulted him in 1980. He further maintains that the patient, a successful businesswoman now in her 50s, has been "asleep" since she was raped at the age of two by her stepfather, who continued to sexually abuse her for 14 years. The cluster of personalities, speaking through a troop member dubbed the "Recorder," talk about their suffering for the primary victim who, it is also revealed, was mistreated by her mother as well. There are sensational episodes described by beings identified as social Alvira, hard Nails, alert Gatekeeper and others. Although the novelistic overtones in the text strain credibility, the book nonetheless proves to be a convincing, affecting case study. Author Tour.

From Library Journal

The strange world inhabited by those afflicted with schizophrenia or multiple personality syndrome is virtually impenetrable. By illuminating these convoluted worlds, both books make major contributions to the understanding of mental illness. North began to exhibit manifestations of schizophrenia as a child. Desite her acceptance of "voices" and "visions" as reality, the reader can easily identify with her as she struggles through her schooling. She graphically descibes her breakdowns and traumatic hospitalizations during her college years and in medical school. Her eventual success in conquering her disability and attaining her goal of becoming a physician evokes a sense of exhilaration. --Carol R. Glatt, New Jersey Bioethics Commission, Trenton

5.0 out of 5 stars Horrifyingly good, Jan 30 2003

This review is from: When Rabbit Howls (Mass Market Paperback)
I picked this book up at the airport right before my plane was to depart, primarily out of desperation for something to read on a 13 hour flight. Read the whole thing twice on the plane. I've read it maybe ten times since then, and every time it still shocks me. The things Truddi lived through are apalling, and the story of her treatment and recovery (?) fascinating, but perhaps the best parts are the scenes that take place inside her mind. None of the other books or movies I've seen on this subject go into detail about the inner workings of the multiple mind. Watching the Troops interact and care for one another, especially the younger, more vulnerable ones, is an experience one is unlikely to find elsewhere. Definately not for children, but I heartily recommend it to anyone with the constitution to handle this intensely harrowing story. I still have nightmares about it, but if my house was on fire, this book would come with me.

5.0 out of 5 stars disturbing but great, Nov 15 2010

Despite the disturbing subject matter, this is one of the best books I have ever read. Read many years ago but still sticks in my mind as a fascinating read. I am not an avid reader so a book has to "grab" me within the first few pages and this one definitely did that. Would highly recommend for both casual and avid readers. But not for the young or faint of heart...stomach turning in parts.

5.0 out of 5 stars Complex and disturbing but worth it, Dec 15 2008

This is an unsettling read, for sure, yet I highly recommend you pick this one up, read it, try to digest it, then pass it on to friends and discuss it. You won't be disappointed.

The complexity of the Troops' lives is hard to grasp and after reading their story, you'll want to talk through your thoughts with others.

You'll not find many books like this out there. This is a don't miss!
