From Publishers Weekly

Bestseller Clark (Where Are the Children?) spins yet another imaginative tale of murder and deceit. Every Mother's Day over the 10 years since Charles Mack MacKenzie Jr. disappeared from Columbia University just before his graduation, Mack has phoned his mother in Manhattan to let her know he's all right, but otherwise reveals nothing. In the meantime, Mack's lawyer father has perished in the 9/11 tragedy. Now Mack's younger sister, Carolyn, a graduate of Columbia and Duke Law School, where Mack was intending to go, tells him during his annual call that she's going to find him. When a note from Mack turns up in the collection plate at St. Francis church, asking Father Devon MacKenzie, his uncle, to tell Carolyn not to look for him, she becomes even more determined to do so. Based on a real story, as Clark notes in her acknowledgments, this novel of suspense will keep readers guessing to the nail-biting conclusion. (Apr.)

Review

'International bestseller Mary Higgins Clark has won many awards for her suspense novels. Originally a short-story writer, she began writing books after she was widowed young. She regularly wrote from five until seven in the morning, before getting her five children ready and going out to work. Her latest thriller is her twenty-seventh. In it she asks 'How far would you go to keep a secret?' Extract for the bookclub, Woman's Weekly 05/01 'This new thriller from a mistress of the art revolves around Mack, who's been missing for 10 years -- but calls every Mother's Day. His sister vows to find him and the truth behind his disappearance, but her search reveals a dangerous secret and a deadly enemy...' Best Magazine, 13/1 'A good, fascinating read with a surprise ending which was really unexpected' New Books magazine, Feb issue 'The characters are intriguing and the suspense will definitely keep you turning the pages' Mary Louise Patterson, Isle of Wight 'It really was 'unputdownable' (I read it in a couple of days). So, if you enjoy a good whodunit, this book is a must-read for you. As for me? Mary Higgins Clark has a new fan' Lorna Fielding, Chislehurst 'A word of warning: don't start reading this book late at night if you have to get up early the next day' Janice Dalton, Weston-Super-Mare Bookclub, Women's Weekly 03/02

Don't miss this book!

Mary Higgins Clark fans will be delighted with this nicely told mystery, one of her very best. Families provide lots of drama for most people, and Ms. Clark wisely chooses to add family complications to increase the flavor of this excellent story.

What would you think of your only brother disappeared just before finishing college . . . except to make a brief phone call for Mom on Mother's Day? It's pretty frustrating, suggesting that he doesn't care about you at all. Sis is Carolyn MacKenzie, a bright lawyer whose clerkship has just ended sooner than she expected.

Carolyn decides to push brother Mack to permanently surface. He quickly sends a message to back off . . . but Carolyn is not going to do that. Badly dislocated lives are soon fractured in painful ways.

Other currents are moving swiftly in dark places, and soon there are other mysteries to solve. In the process, you'll meet a lot of vulnerable people with secrets to keep. You'll also meet some pretty questionable types. But who did what?

It's a great mystery premise to think about someone who is missing but stays in touch on Mother's Day. I had a hard time imagining what was behind such behavior.

I also liked the way Ms. Clark developed her characters. Lots of them are interesting, and you'll care about what happens to them.

But I must save my special praise for the mystery: It's hard to solve due to excellent misdirection and lots of subtle clues with multiple potential meanings.

Brava, Ms. Clark!

A son/brother is missing. Yet, he has been calling his mother every Mother's Day for the past 10 years. His sister listens in on the last conversation and vows to find him. He tells her to forget it, not even try. In a subsequent investigation promoted by his sister, police zero in on one person. But Carolyn, the sister, is kidnapped and the race is on to find her. Technology helps. The surprise conclusion is learning who was involved in the scheme only to learn it is the greed of one man. The usual Mary Higgins Clark tension is evident throughout the story.
