Little ones will bounce with anticipation as the simple yet clever text takes them to visit one sheep and then another. The green sheep, however, is nowhere to be seen until the final spread, where he is found under a very green bush, fast asleep. Until the lost sheep turns up, children will have fun with the other sheep that make an appearance and perhaps, unbeknownst to them, also get lessons in colors and comparisons (the near sheep, the far sheep). In this neat and satisfying wedding of text and art, the squat, square format uses wool-white backgrounds to display much of the amusing pen-and-watercolor pictures. As for the sheep themselves, Horacek has concocted simply lined happy animals, whose wool is indicated by dozens of curlicues. The summary on the back page of Where Is the Green Sheep? reads: "The story of many different sheep, and one who appears to be missing." I couldn't have said it better myself! As well as teaching about opposites, this book has humour, mystery and sweet, whimsical illustrations.

My one-year old daughter loves this book and will pick it out every night as her bedtime story. She quickly learned to say "shhh" at the end of the story. My husband found it at the local library, but we went out and bought a copy for her (and one for all our baby friends).

The kids at storytime really like this book. It is always fun, because they are so proud that they know where the Green Sheep is after the first read. They respond in unison everytime the text reads, "but where is the green sheep?" The illustrations are so cute you'll want to keep looking for the green sheep too!
