From the Inside Flap

Tolstoy communicates the teachings of Jesus through brilliantly crafted Russian characters and imaginative stories.

"Where Love Is, There God Is Also," written in 1885, has been widely told from the pulpit, though few know its proper title or origin. It is the story of a humble shoemaker who takes in tired and hungry guests while waiting for a visit from Christ.

In "The Three Hermits," a bishop encounters an unusual trio. The hermits have dedicated their lives to worshiping God, yet they struggle to recite the Lord's Prayer when the concerned bishop teaches it to them. His efforts lead to an important lesson in holiness and prayer.

In the third story in this collection, "What Men Live By," an angel is banished to earth until he has learned what is in men, what is not given to men, and what men live by. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a Gem of a book!, Nov 16 1997

Anyone finding themselves intemidated by the works of Tolstoy should start off with reading this book. These three short stories, "Where Love Is, There God Is Also", "The Three Hermits", and "What Men Live By", are some of the most powerful words I have seen put to paper. Those troubled by today's problems owes it to themselves to read this book and absorb the relevance that in fact is timeless. Even those finding a lack of belief in God will be moved and questioned their beliefs. Any of Tolstoy's works are a must read in everyone's lifetime, but these stories remain special to this reader.

5.0 out of 5 stars The essence of Chrisitanity, Feb 8 2010
By E-Lizabeth "Eliz" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Where Love Is, There God Is Also (Hardcover)
My grandfather, who was very much alive during the last few decades of Tolstoy's life, started the wonderful tradition of reading "Where Love is, There God Is Also" every Christmas.

This story is what Christmas is all about. It espouses the core principles of Christianity and the true meaning and worship of God.

As your children grow beyond "A Night Before Christmas" this story is the perfect complement and/or replacement for the newer more commercial stories that aren't about the true meaning of Christmas. Of course, adults will love this story too.

Warning- when you're reading it to children & young adults, you may want to change the character's names a bit. The Russian names can be difficult to pronounce and it will make the story more relatable to non-Russians!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Collection of Fine Stories With Christian Themes, Dec 30 2011

There are three short stories in this novella: Where Love Is, There God Is Also, The Three Hermits, and What Men Live By. All three stories are simply wonderful (hey, were talking Tolstoy here). The stories were written in Tolstoy's later life and are centered on Christian themes. They are designed to give the reader many ideas to ponder, but are not "preachy" in any way. I recommend this novella to all readers.
