In the near-constant deluge of singer-songwriters to emerge in recent years, Willy Mason towers above the rest through sheer quality. Listening to the 12 tracks on his debut album Where the Humans Eat, you'd be forgiven for mistaking this 20-year-old native of Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts for someone much older and more experienced. His off-kilter delivery--a bit off-key, a bit off-time--is just part of his charm. But Mason's real talent is as a songwriter, and he is almost without peer amongst his contemporaries. "It's a hard hand to hold / that is looking for control" he sings on "Hard Hand to Hold", a song about homelessness and disaffection that never preaches or judges. His keen observations and deft lyrics place him in an American tradition that includes Bob Dylan, Woody Guthrie and Hank Williams. Like the best protest singers, Mason is not motivated by anger at the way the world is, but hope in what the world can be. As a result, Where the Humans Eat is sweet, simple and altogether excellent. --Robert Burrow

Great, great, great CD. Every single song is amazing, as is the pacing of the album. I recommend this album to anyone and everyone.
It was a real breath of fresh air when i heard his song 'oxygen' playing on the radio, went straight out and bought the album, looking forward to him coming to montreal in april.

Go and buy it now, you wont regret it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple, Raw Talent. How's that sound?, Dec 12 2004

You know. Nobody got Dylan when he first hit the clubs of NY. Unusual voice, different lyrical style, hard hitting ideas. 40 years later he's a legend. Well check this out. Willy Mason is a true talent in the most artistic of ways. This CD reflects him so well in many ways. Lyrically, Willy confronts issues of youth. (He himself recently graduated from high school on Martha's Vineyard.) To hear idealism in this day and age is refreshing too. Not idealism in the obvious way but in the real way. Take the song "Oxygen". Although he points to many issues that younger folk confront such as the power of television, ADD, the drugging of our young people. "on and on and on it goes. The world it just keeps spinning." In spite of all that is faced, the singer wants to be better than all that; wants to strive in spite of the pressures. Wants to be better. You're sitting in the kitchen; Willy with guitar, maybe his bro Sam on drums. A very personal style, intimate and right there in your parlor. The production is sparse and raw. No undue sounds or orchestrations. Everything belongs and is uneffected and pure. Willy is a person writing from deep places in a new young voice, with the appropriate edge. You should invite this CD into your home. You and your kids will love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brought a tear to my eye., Mar 4 2005

I purchased this CD not expecting much. I had only heard 'oxygen' and thought that this song alone is worth buying the album for. After listening to the first couple of songs a realised what i was in for. It is lyrically genius and so bittersweet it will bring a tear to your eye and send shivers down your spine. Although in some parts your head will be nodding away without you realising. 'Were the humans eat', lies between Bob Dylan and the Black Keys musically ... only better. Willy Mason's debut album 'Where the humans eat' is a must buy for every music lovers house hold. It will lyrically blow you away and make you conamplate life once or twice.

4.0 out of 5 stars No Words., Jan 22 2006

I went to high school with Willy. Now that would make you think that I'm biased in my view of him, but if you look above there are only 4 stars. I have been listening to Willy and his family make music forever, and for the longest time, I wasn't that impressed with him.

This album made me a fan of a friend. His maturity shines through this album. It's raw, it's beautiful and most of all, it's truthful. I find truth has gotten quite lost lately in music. And this album helps to bring it back.

If you don't own this CD, you're missing out. This young man has something to say, and it's something we all need to hear.
