"Perfect for reading by the fire with a glass of Scotch."  —Imbibe

Product Description

For centuries, whisky has tickled the palettes of the famous and the infamous alike, the good as well as the downright sinful. In this study, Charles MacLean pours a lifetime's passion and knowledge of Scotch whisky into an extraordinary array of anecdotes about this popular drink and those who have loved it—from Robbie Burns, Scotland's best-loved poet, to comedian Dave Allen. This is perfect weekend reading for all whisky lovers—from ghost stories, tales of illicit smuggling operations, and feuding between the Scottish whisky families to poems and literary celebrations of the world's finest spirit and Scotland's most generous gift to the world.

An admirable treasure trove of real and useful information about the whiskey industry, its history and the forces shaping the product. Very entertaining, but with fantastic gems of real info on every page.

Loved it.

Never have I read a book on the topic so rich in knowledge and fun. It reads like a grandpa sitting in an armchair and sharing what he treasures generously and heartedly. The authenticity of each the articles engaged my attention, like no salespeople in the industry had done. A top of the shelf item!

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun little book full of all sorts of whisky facts, Oct 18 2011

Upon first glance, I thought this book might contain many (true) short stories by illicit distillers, whisky connoisseurs and the like but after reading the synopsis here, I realized it was a collection of various factoids and tidbits about whisky. What is not mentioned here but is mentioned in the foreword of the book is that Mr. Maclean intends this to be an updated, expanded version of his former title, Maclean's Miscellany of Whisky.

It is easy reading. There is a loose fabric binding all the short chapters together and there are some faint signposts of chronology but it does shift gears quite rapidly at times. The dustcover is quite handsome and the book itself is made very well. Of particular note is the quality of the color reproductions of vintage whisky adverts.

If you're a whisky fan, this very informative, affordable book will be a treat to own. It is not meant to be an exhaustive, pedagogical analysis of whisky and at that, it exceeds quite well!
