From Booklist

Gr. 6-8. Ed Young, whose haunting illustrations of the wolf made his Caldecott- winning Lon Po Po (1989) so memorable, was well chosen as the illustrator for the Scribner Illustrated Classics edition of White Fang. Jack London's 1906 novel. As many will remember, London tells the story of a wolf-dog who endures great cruelty before he comes to know human kindness. The 12 pastel illustrations illuminate the text with their dramatic use of light and dark, sensitively delineated forms, and soft, subtle shades of color. A handsome new edition of a longtime favorite. Carolyn Phelan

Book Description

Tor Classics are affordably-priced editions designed to attract the young reader. Original dynamic cover art enthusiastically represents the excitement of each story. Appropriate "reader friendly" type sizes have been chosen for each title—offering clear, accurate, and readable text. All editions are complete and unabridged, and feature Introductions and Afterwords.

This edition of White Fang includes a Foreword, Biographical Note, and Afterword by Dwight V. Swain.

He was three quarters wolf and all fury. Born in a cave, in famine, in the frozen arctic. Born in a world where the weak died without mercy, where only the swift, the strong, the cunning saw each dawn. It was White Fang's world--until he and his mother were captured by the man-gods.

But men and their dogs taught White Fang to hate. He was beaten, abused, attacked. He was bought, sold, tortured, trained to kill in blood sports. Knowing no kindness, he became a mad, lethal, creature of pure rage.

Only one man saw White Fang's intelligence and nobility. Only one had the courage to offer the killer a new life. But can a wolf understand the word "hope"? Can a creature of hatred understand the word "love"?

5.0 out of 5 stars The best book I ever read, Mar 23 2005
This was a great book I would recommend this book for dog lovers and wolf lovers from all ages. It shows how White Fang grows up and is brought up in the world by his masters and the wild. As he struggles to determine good from evil, right from wrong it is a great adventure for White Fang and others.

This book is about a half-wolf half -dog called White Fang. This story starts out before he was born. When his father and his mother are in a starving wolf pack they are forced to eat dogs off of a sled team that was traveling to a town. Every night White Fangs mother would come into their camp and lure one of their sled dogs away from the camp. The pack would eat the dog, and they did this until there was no sled dogs left then, ate the two remaining unarmed men. One day White Fangs mother and One eye his father, leave the pack to hunt on there own. They then have puppies but there was not enough food to support them all, so all the puppies but one died. White Fang was the only survivor. Soon after his father dies in a fight with a lynx, White Fang and his mother have to live on their own. In this time White Fang learns about the wild, how to kill and get meat. Then one day a tribe of Indians discovers him and his mother. White Fang's new master was his mother's old master and White Fang is forced to live in the camp with his mother. There was no warm welcome for White Fang. The older puppies would always fight him and hurt him on purpose. They soon take away his mother and he receives sever beatings from his master. When he turns one, he is put on a sled team alone with other puppies and they journey from town to town trading fur and other goods. He is then later sold to a greedy pit dog owner Beauty Smith. White fang is then forced to fight as a pit dog, he has to kill or be killed. He wins many battles against other pit dogs but when one match almost costs his life he then is found by a new loving master Weedon Scott. Weedon Scott tames White Fang and show him the true love of a master.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Classic That Never Grows Old, April 25 2008

This review is from: White Fang (Paperback)
White Fang is a great book for all dog lovers, but most importantly, humanity. It is a tale about perseverance, hope, love, nature, and redemption. It follows the birth and life of a wolf cub who refuses to give up, against all odds. It shows his development and growth throughout his life until the end. Not a light read by any means, but a story anyone in any situation can relate to somehow. Even though it was written in 1906, the moral of the story still applies today.
