Product Description

From Amazon.com

English singer-songwriter David Gray recorded his fourth album, White Ladder, at home in 1998 and self-released it after three previous albums garnered critical acclaim and little else. Opening for the likes of Dave Matthews and Radiohead helped up his profile and led to Matthews choosing White Ladder as the U.S. debut for his new ATO label. It's not difficult to hear what attracted Matthews to Gray. There's a strong dose of romantic wanderlust to these tunes. "This Year's Love," with its somber piano notes, captures the drifter feel of earlier Gray work (such as the remarkable "A Gathering of Dust" from his debut)."Sail Away" is "Dock of the Bay" from another side of the shore. Gray clearly loves words, and the way he emphasizes them--spitting them out in contempt one minute, soulfully stretching a note out at other moments--lends his music drama. It's no wonder he's been compared to so heavy an improviser as Van Morrison. There's a spiritual connection there that this strong release makes only more obvious. --Rob O'Connor

Product Description

David Gray's glorious fourth record explodes in a wellspring of spacious, electronica-tinged folk-pop. He uses his bright growl of a voice to memorable effect, chewing on vowel sounds while spinning odes to lost love, the resiliency of young hearts, and the pain of experience. Gray's work finds the universality at the heart of folk music and tweaks it just enough to make it relevant for alternative audiences. --Matthew Cooke

One of the best of the 90's like top 20 without doubt May 1 2007
Format:Audio CD
I was at work today when I decided to listen to this album, I've already heard the album coutless times and have owned it for the past two years, and while I was scoping the latest Vertigo trade releases I decided to drop by and mention that this is essential to all well rounded music collections and is absolutely one of the most beautiful singer-songwriter albums you will ever hear. I felt this was important enough to say even though there are already 266 reviews, because frankly we must cherish great art even after its 8 years old etc.

PS if amazons editors let this slide I want to encourage everybody to check out AL GREEN definitive collection which I found has parallels suprisingly to this album.

Cheers,

happy listening

An instant classic Nov 5 2005

Simply put, Gray is a genius. His unique, soulful, passionate, powerful vocal stylings and gorgeous lyrics lend a helping hand in propelling this album into the hearts of millions. Even the album's weakest tracks are still incredible and even the weak of heart who argue that the production of this album is sub-par, when listening to the lyrics and Gray's voice, it just doesn't matter. 'White Ladder' is an album that I guarantee will stay with you wherever you go, mentally and physically. It's earnest, un-pretentious, emotional, introspective and confessional. It's perfect for a time when you want to reflect on your own life, love and sadness.

Finally some recognition Jan 24 2005
Format:Audio CD
I first heard Dave in Ireland in the spring of 2000 and quickly learned why this album went to #1 on Ireland's charts: it is simply excellent. There isn't one dud on this album. On the strength of this album I purchased others of his as well and found that his previous output was as good and sometimes surpassed (which I didn't think possible) this work. I would recommend this album to anyone who likes contemporary folk, and would also suggest picking up Dave's other works as well. They won't be exactly the same but the great songwriting is still there. You won't regret this, or any other purchase of his music. Enjoy.
