About the Author
Mark Anthony Jarman is the author of 19 Knives, New Orleans Is Sinking, and the travel book Ireland’s Eye. He has been short-listed for the O. Henry Prize and Best American Essays, he won a Gold National Magazine Award in non-fiction, has twice won the Maclean-Hunter Endowment Award, and has been included in The Journey Prize Anthology and Best Canadian Stories. He teaches at the University of New Brunswick, where he is fiction editor of The Fiddlehead.&n

I'm not very familiar with Canadian literature (I hear, according to the back of the book, this guy is a significant player) but its not very much like Margret ATwood.. the only other Canadian writer I have read. The writing is choppy and abstract, a bit experimental, not a hard linear narrative. My favorite story in this book is the title story. The rest reads a bit amateurish. His use of words and phrases sometimes produces entertaining imagery, but really its nothing new, more like trying very limply to be compelling and zaney... so maybe it is a bit canadian... but on the whole its very bland and a bit contrived. The worst of the bunch is about a skater who dies falling off a bridge. The tale is told after the fact by showing all of the graffitied messages written... so the majority of the story being: TREV WAS THE MAN! TREV 4 LIFE! MAN, YOU WAS THE BEST! I HOPE YOU GOT SOME AIR! I DIDNT KNOW U, BUT HEARD U WAS REALLY COOL! WISH WE COULDA HUNG OUT! end.
