Book Description

The time is 1939. White South Africa is a deeply divided nation with many of the Afrikaner people fanatically opposed to the English. The world is also on the brink of war and South Africa elects to fight for the Allied cause against Germany. Six-year-old Tom Fitzsaxby finds himself in The Boys Farm, an orphanage in a remote town in the high mountains, where the Afrikaners side fiercely with Hitler's Germany. Tom's English name proves sufficient for him to be ostracised, marking him as an outsider. And so begin some of life's tougher lessons for the small, lonely boy.

4.0 out of 5 stars A "big" read in every way !, Nov 22 2006
By
C. Harris (Ottawa, Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Whitethorn (Hardcover)
I really enjoy Bryce Courtenay's sagas, and this story of a young boy of English descent being raised in an Afrikaans orphanage is no exception. To imagine how valued the English lad is, it helps to know that his nickname is "voetsek", an word in Afrikaans" meaning "bastard". The story is set in 1939, as the Afrikaners side with Hitler's Germany, and fanatically hate the English. This part of South Africa's history is quite shocking. The English boy spends his adult life trying to find love and seeking justice for a crime committed many years ago. He encounters many beautiful people along the way, and some people who are so evil that you can hardly read about them.

This is a complex, interesting, heart-breaking and heart-warming book, all at the same time.

If you want a genuinely "big read", I would recommend this book. It gets a tiny bit "wordy" in places, but all in all, the fascinating history and complex culture of the people make you want to know how it will end.

3.0 out of 5 stars Was Ok, Dec 2 2009
This review is from: Whitethorn (Mass Market Paperback)
After reading Potato Factory, Tommo & Hawk, Solomons Song and Jessica (my favourite), I found Whitethorn OK. It didn't leave me wanting more like the afore mentioned, it was just kind of, OK. Looking forward to reading Power of One.
