One of Newbery Honor author Avi's most popular middle-grade mysteries is available in paper once again.  The mystery revolves around a rare edition of The Wizard of Oz missing from the local library. When Becky is accused of stealing it, she and her twin brother Toby set out to catch the real thief and prove her innocence. Clues cleverly hidden in four other books lead to a hidden treasure--and a gripping adventure.

4.0 out of 5 stars Who stole the wizard of oz review, Mar 12 2004
By
H. Moten (Cerritos Ca USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Who Stole the Wizard of Oz? (Paperback)
The book I read is called Who Stole the Wizard of Oz? This book is mainly about a girl named Becky. She was accused by the town librarian for stealing a book named The Wizard of Oz. Becky decides to get help from her twin brother Toby and prove her innocence by tracking down the real thief. While Becky and Toby are investigating the case they seem to bump in to other unlikely events. Including that four other books are missing. Soon they found enough information that they can start tracking down the real thief. They try to go to the treasure before the thief gets there first. It turns out that the thief was Mrs. Chesterton, the librarian itself.
What I liked about this book is that it was a mystery. I love mysteries especially something like this. I always liked the parts of the investigation. That way if they tell you enough information you can solve the mystery yourself. I tried to solve this mystery, but my guess was wrong. I guessed that Mrs. Brattle did it, the other town librarian. My second guess was Mrs. Chesterton.
What I disliked about this book was that the thief should have been someone else. Maybe like Toby, Becky's twin brother. That way it would have been more interesting. I always liked the mysteries that one of the family members turns out to be the thief. So everyone could be surprised and they can get there punishments from there parents. I think that that would be more interesting.
My favorite part in this book is once again, the investigation. I like the investigation because it gives you the all the clues. So you can solve the crime as you read too. I also like the part when they find the real thief. I like that part because the real thief could get its punishment and Beck could get off the hook.

4.0 out of 5 stars THEIF! THEIF!, Jun 11 2003
By A Customer
THEIF! THEIF!
A missing book holds the key to locating a hidden treasure! A remarkable fiction book by Avi tells the story of Becky and her twin bother Toby trying to find it.

What happens when the local library accuses Becky for stealing a rare children's book well Becky didn't do it! And she finds herself trying to find out the real thief Securing around the library Becky and Toby crack the case! How did they? You find out!

I like Becky the most she's so deterred and wants to figure it out. For example on page 60 " Becky had gotten out a huge pad of paper and felt pen and was trying to put it all together " This also reminded me of a self to self connection that quote reminded me of when I had just got a new quiz book. I was trying to put every thing together. Becky also is brave shes not afraid to try! She's smart too! Putting clues together!
She even finds she can use the maps from the books to find the treasure.
Like on page 71 " Where did I say they found the treasure in Treasure Island?" I asked Becky
I think that this book is super. It will keep you reading FOREVER or at least till you Finnish it. The author Avi draws you in with cool chapter names like on page 90 "Though the looking glass." What could happen in that chapter? You'll be drawn in with both cool and interesting clues like them using the maps from the books to find the treasure. Like on page 71, "Where did I say they found the treasure in Treasure Island ?" I asked Becky See want I mean! That reminded me of one time my friend and I tried following a map from a book and just ended up walking in to a tree .

Will Toby and Becky just walk in to a tree or will they crack the case?
Find out by reading this book.
Guess what else?
If you like these books find other books by Avi for example the True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle, it's a Historical fiction book about a girl on a ship. Who stole the wizard of Oz on the other hand is a Mystery book if you like it you might want to try reading these other Mystery books.
You be the Jury is a great Mystery book for any one who likes to wonder, when there reading a Mystery book. You get to solve these ones. Mary Kate and Ashley is a good one too this is just like Who stole the wizard of Oz they use clues and crack the case.

Short Summery
In the beginning Becky find out that the library think that she stole its very exiting because you keep thinking, "Did she? Did she? What if she did?" Then in the middle they start looking for the real thief I think that the middle is the best part, because it's when they find all the cool clues. The middle will really draw you in. What drawn me in the most was the searches in the library I always wondered if they where going to find †he real thief. In the end Becky discovers who stole the book and why find out who did it by reading Who Stole the Wizard of Oz written and illustrated by Avi. Thanks for reading ...

4.0 out of 5 stars Read it and find out, Feb 17 2002
This review is from: Who Stole the Wizard of Oz? (Paperback)
I think Who Stole the Wizard of Oz is a good book because it is a mystery book and I like mysteries. A girl named Becky and her brother Toby are accused of stealing the book The Wizard of Oz. It wasn't supposed to be in the book sale. It was very rare and probably worth about $3,000.

Most of the names in the books were donated by Gertrude Tobias. Becky and Toby think that she may have something to do with it, but I can't tell you the ending. Read more and find out who stole the book.
