Product Description

From Amazon.com

Who's the Boss? was a standard sitcom--turned on its head. Sure, there was a mom, a dad, two cute kids, a house in the suburbs... and a live studio audience. But Angela Bower (Judith Light) was a single advertising exec with a son (Danny Pintauro) and Tony Micelli (Tony Danza) was a widowed ex-ballplayer with a daughter (future Charmed star Alyssa Milano). The Connecticut mansion belonged to Angela (along with the big '80s hair and shoulder pads) and Tony wasn't her boyfriend, but rather her housekeeper. Then there was her mother, Mona (the incomparable Katherine Helmond). The sexed-up, slightly cracked grandmother is a primetime staple, but in the former Soap matriarch's hands, the character was a cut above (and usually got the best lines). As Angela complains to her in the pilot, "You've sent me a man for a housekeeper!" "Oh, don't be sexist," Mona replies. "A man can do meaningless, unproductive work just as well as a woman."

"Meaningless, unproductive work" is what Tony does for the Bowers--and does well--but he and Samantha (Milano) also become part of the family. Angela and Tony go on a number of dates with other people, but there's an obvious sexual tension between them. The show would continue to exploit that tension for eight seasons to great success (even inspiring a British version called The Upper Hand, with Honor Blackman as the "Mona" character). Helmond, meanwhile, would garner an Emmy and a Golden Globe for her efforts. Highlights include "Mona Gets Pinned," in which Mona takes up with a younger man, and "Angela's Ex, Part I," in which Angela reconciles with her estranged husband--who proceeds to fire Tony. Guest stars include Betty White (Mary Tyler Moore) in "Eye on Angela" and Danza's Taxi co-star Jeff Conoway in "First Kiss." --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Truly a CLASSIC Situation Comedy or SITCOM July 12 2004
Format:DVD
This show, Who's the Boss?, is the classic of all sitcoms! It was in some ways like a soap opera, it kept you watching week after week to see Angela and Tony finally make a try at it together as a couple. Judith Light had plenty experience as an actress in a soap opera, previous to landing the role on this sitcom. Tony Danza, formerly of Taxi, does an excellent job of portraying Tony Micelli on this classic sitcom. Danza was and is still a hunk and was one of the main reasons that I watched the show every week. 1980's classic comedy that goes above and beyond typical sitcoms in that it was a long running show.

Classic Sit Com Jun 16 2004
Format:DVD
Some people may consider Who's the Boss to be somewhat of a cheesy situation comedy, and maybe it is. But I always found it funny and it is one of the few sit coms I would ever actually sit down to watch. And it's probably the only sit com I ever felt sad to see end.

Who's the Boss ended the same year The Cosby Show did and I recall several commentaries that denigrated the show in comparison because it had no lasting social value. Even though that may be true, who watches situation comedies for their lasting social values? And name any situation comedy that strives for such a lofty aim? The bottom line is it's an entertaining and funny show and in that regard it succeeds.

Unfortunately, my version of the DVDs has poor sound quality and a lot of times the voices don't match with the actors and I have to stop and replay the DVD to get them to match up. I'm not sure if that is just the DVDs I received or if it's a manufacturing flaw in all of them.

A great classic sitcom! Jun 11 2004
Format:DVD
If you grew up on reruns of the show (like me) then I would definitely say this is for you. Although some find the show lame today, I would go buy this and relive my memories. Watching Alyssa Milano and Danny Pinatauro grow up, Mona cracking a man joke and seeing Tony and Angela's flirtatious fun really make up this set. I can't wait for some of the later episodes.
