5.0 out of 5 stars Who's That Girl (1987) Jan. 12 2004
Format:VHS Tape
Madonna has shown us that she has a true talent in being a singer, with the release of three amazing albums, Madonna (1983), Like A Virgin (1984), and True Blue (1986). She then showed us that she has a true talent as an actress, where she starred in Desperately Seeking Susan (1985) and Shanghai Surprise (1986). This spunky comedy is a must-have movie, where Madonna explores the depths of comedy.
Madonna plays Nicole "Nikki" Finn, a free-spirited girl who enjoys life to the fullest extent. In 1983, Nikki was arrested for the murder of her boyfriend. However, Nikki did not committ the crime. Her boyfriend, Johnny, oversaw a particular meeting going on between an unidentified man and a pimp named Raoul. Johnny gets the goods on this guy: photos, tapes, etc. He locks all if that stuff in the indentified man's saftey deposit box and gives Nikki the key. The unidentified man hires Raoul and some fat guy to kill Johnny. The two put his corpse in the trunk of Nikki's car. She gets in the car, takes a red light and is pulled over. The cops open up her trunk, and there's Johnny's dead body. Four years later, Nikki is granted parolle.
Griffen Dunne plays Loudon Trott, a tax attorney, who is one day from marrying the daughter, Wendy Worthington, of his boss, Mr. Worthington. His boss gets a call about Nikki being granted her parolle. She was asked to leave New York and take the bus to Philadelphia. Mr. Worthington wants Loudon to drive Nikki to the bus station and make sure she gets on the bus to Philly. Instead of letting him take her, Nikki takes Loudon on wild goose chase to clear her name before she returns to Philly. Her craziness has everyone around her asking, "Who's That Girl".

3.0 out of 5 stars A big improvement from Shanghai Surprise Sept. 18 2003
By Nicky
Format:VHS Tape
What puzzles me is, why the studio released the quite frankly awful Shanghai Surprise on DVD and not this film. This film is a huge improvement from Shanghai Surprise. Madonna is actually attempting to act in this movie. The only down-side is her insistence on talking in a squeaky New Yawk accent, which becomes quite annoying. The reason I think why this movie flopped was not just because of Madge's accent but the jokes have got to be the lamest I've ever heard, really the sort of joke a seven year old would tell. It is a shame because the idea for the film is very good (tart with a heart hell bent on getting revenge on the people who wrongly put her in the slammer). Unfortunately, this film tries too hard to be a comedy and it ends up falling flat on it's face. There's something quite childish about this movie, had it been made for kids it might have worked. Madonna's character certainly seems to be behaving like a ten year old overdosed on caffeine. The cougar steals the show and the cartoon opening sequence is better than the film itself. Having said that, it's certainly more watchable than Shanghai Surprise. Perhaps Madonna should have agreed to do the movie Blind Date instead of turning it down in favour of this film.

5.0 out of 5 stars Madonna's best film till date. June 5 2003
Format:VHS Tape
Anyone that has followed Madonna's filmography will have to agree that this is one of Madonna's better films. As far as I am concerned this is the most entertaining of Madonna's films. Who's that Girl is a riot featuring Madonna as a recently released from prison screw ball blond that sets the big apple in an uproar as she tries to clear her name for a murder that she never committed. Madonna seems to be at ease with this role and seems to go with her just fine when you compare it to some her more recent dismal roles in films like Four Rooms, Dick Tracy, A League of Her Own, the atrocious Evita, and even The Next Best Thing. This film is an hour and a half of pure dumb comedy in which Madonna manages to give a reasonably decent and believable character and at times is even funny. Even though this film was a flop at the box office, the film does entertain and especially if you are a fan of the Material Girl. Madonna is dumb, funny, pretty, glamorous, and looks every inch of an 80's pop star in Who's that Girl. A great soundtrack featuring four Madonna tracks adds to the highlight of this film. Madonna was definitely the girl of the eighties.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great, Underrated Zany Comedy Romp Dec 29 2002
Format:VHS Tape
I was very surprised when I saw this movie the other day just how great it was. I was expecting maybe a decent movie predominantly featuring Madonna's 4 songs from the soundtrack and a laid back script that probably wouldn't make much sense. Well, the plot did NOT make sense, but to be fair, it didn't make sense in classic 80's fashion. What we have here is arguably one of the best comedies of the late 80's. (I read another person's review of this where they said Desperately Seeking Susan was a better movie but not as funny. I agree. DSS was slightly better, but not nearly as funny.) Of course, this movie is much more Madonna than DSS was. Griffen Dunne is priceless as a young, engaged lawyer trying to keep Nikki (Madonna) in line as a favor for his fiance's father. No matter what he does he does not succeed. It's bad enough that he also has to pick up a rare species of panther, his fiance's father's "pet". When Nikki leaves prison, he tries to take control of her and make sure she gets on the bus to Philadelphia as planned. Before he knows it, she is driving his in laws' car, or rather body-slamming it through suburban traffic. She also boosts tapes from a mall (you get a glimpse of longbox CDs in there) and gets a man arrested just so she can do so. By the end of the day...so much 80's-esque zany comedic situation has occurred you won't believe it. You won't be able to stop laughing, especially when they are chasing a UPS man in hot pursuit of a priceless necklace WHILE being chased by 2 men they thought they ditched who have a rift with Nikki. Just hilarious, and then, the next day, Dunne's wedding day. You can imagine! WHO'S THAT GIRL is a priceless comedy, bargain-bin 80's style, and one that should not be missed by fans and non-fans of Madonna. I certainly hope it's released on DVD soon. It deserves to be.
