Product Description

From Library Journal

As more and more Americans discover that crash diets and diet pills don't work, they are turning to self-help books that stress taking responsibility for one's weight and eating more healthily. Why Can't I Stop Eating? focuses on understanding how addictive substances, such as carbohydrates, sugar, and caffeine, react in the body. Danowski and Lazaro, a recovering food addict and a medical director of three addictions hospitals, respectively, believe that carbohydrate addiction is the main reason why 50 percent of Americans are overweight. The authors cite research illustrating physiological reasons for food cravings (especially carbohydrates) and downplaying the effectiveness of weight-loss drugs like Fen/Phen. They also provide exercises that clarify which foods trigger overeating and diets that emphasize low carbohydrate intake. Jeffrey and Norean Wilbert, a food therapist and a registered nurse, respectively, suggest that "fattitudes"Dself-defeating behavior that causes overeatingDare the main obstacles to maintaining ideal weight and present helpful exercises to identify them. This book's philosophy is that even people genetically prone to obesity have emotional (perhaps unconscious) reasons to be overweight. Because both of these titles are clearly written and will appeal to general readers, they are recommended for larger public libraries.DLeAnna DeAngelo, Springfield, MI

Book Description

North Americans spend $30 billion annually on weight loss, yet nearly 50% remain overweight. Authors Debbie Danowski and Pedro Lazaro, MD, explain why this occurs and present a natural, effective alternative to dangerous drugs and starvation diets. Based on current medical research, Why Can't I Stop Eating? explains the symptoms and physical aspects of food addiction, promotes abstinence from addictive food substances, and provides methods for developing non-addictive eating techniques that support lifelong recovery.

5.0 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK HAS LITERALLY SAVED MY LIFE, Oct 27 2002
By
This review is from: Why Can't I Stop Eating: Recognizing, Understanding, and Overcoming Food Addiction (Paperback)
I have been a food addict for longer than I can remember, but I thought I was the only one who lived the way I did, hiding food, lying about food, eating past the point of getting physically ill and still not being able to stop. When I found this wonderful book, I was relieved to find that I wasn't the only person with this problem, and that it's a disease, NOT the result of a weak mind. This book explains why I was addicted in a way that makes so much sense. I find the food plan easy to live with, and I have ZERO cravings. This book was written by a woman that has lived the same miserable life of an overeater, therefore, she knows exactly what she's talking about. She is living proof that you can overcome this disease. Even if you have given up, please, do yourself a favor and buy this book. I have so much hope for my future, when before, I was afraid I didn't have a future at all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally, a reality based book, Oct 23 2002

This review is from: Why Can't I Stop Eating: Recognizing, Understanding, and Overcoming Food Addiction (Paperback)
We have all read the diet books. How to, how not to, and everything in between.

If you want a straightforward, logical and real look at the problem of overeating, buy this book. This is NOT a diet book. It is a book that explains why you eat and how you can stop overeating.

The book is honest in telling you that it won't be easy and that you need help. You CANNOT DO IT ALONE. The book will tell you how to get help (OA, friends,) and explain that there are tools out there to helpp you through the hell that is overeating.

Do yourself a favor and read this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Changed My Life, Jun 22 2001
By

This review is from: Why Can't I Stop Eating: Recognizing, Understanding, and Overcoming Food Addiction (Paperback)
I have been struggling with my weight my entire life. I have been on so many diets and have seen my weight go up and down for years. I went to the bookstore out of desperation one night after having finished yet another pint of ice cream, and found this book. It was truly a God-send to me and has changed my life so much and all for the better! This is not just another 'diet' book...the authors speak to you as a person and really get to the root of your addiction to sugar, caffiene, flour, among other things. This is the first plan I have been on that I feel completely satisfied all day, am never hungry and never feel the urge to eat any of the things I used to feel I would die without. I never thought anything would work for me, but this has and I am eternally grateful for finding this book.
