From School Library Journal

Grade 3-5-The three "Zs"-Justin Zechendorf, Jessica Zander, and Margaret Zachary-are determined to win the fourth-grade Good Deed Contest. But how? The only thing the partners have in common is their desire to beat the other kids in their class. Justin convinces the girls that he should be in charge because he is an "idea man," but each of his zany schemes leads to hilarious and disastrous results. In the end, however, the Zs triumph-they help catch some car thieves and win the contest. Korman's book has a galloping plot that's full of humor, and young readers are sure to enjoy it.

Product Description

Fourth-grader Justin Zeckendorf has tons of ideas for scoring the most points in the Good Deed Contest, especially since the prize is a trip to the Tidal Wave Water Park. But his problem is his team -- Jessica Zander and Margaret Zachary are two of the drippiest girls on the planet. And Justin's crazy plans always seem to backfire, earning the team negative points! Korman's trademark zany style -- short, snappy, and fun -- makes this book perfect for middle-grade readers, avid and not-so-avid alike.

5.0 out of 5 stars Why Did the underwear cross the road, Dec 2 2002

I thought this book was cute, and well done. It captures the reader within the first couple of paragraphs, and I think that is a must for getting children who dont want to read, like my 13 year old. It matches the thoughts of some children today, and make me wish I were a child again so I could feel like life could be this much fun, even in disappoints. I am impressed that it kept the attention of my 13 year son who hates to read.

4.0 out of 5 stars great for fourth grade, Nov 21 2001
By A Customer
I enjoy the silliness of Korman's stories, and this one has lots of silliness. I booktalk this title occasionally to fourth graders who visit my library and they really get a kick out of it. I would recommend this for grade school students looking for a very funny story.

2.0 out of 5 stars Unlike other Korman books, not one I'd likely re-read, Jun 20 2000
Most of Korman's works, especially those in the MacDonald Hall series, as well as most others focusing on slightly older characters, have the endearing characteristic of being simply written and furiously funny, allowing for appreciation on many levels. Not so with 'Why Did the Underwear Cross the Road', and other attempts to chronicle pre-adolescent life.

Even at their age I found it difficult to identify with any of the characters in such books, and now, several years since, I am still decidedly reluctent to re-read these books, although I routinely re-read such classics as 'Losing Joe's Place' or 'This Can't be Happening at MacDonald Hall'. Do yourself a favor. Buy one of his better books, or if you are in the situation where I was when I read this book, having already read just about all of the rest of Gordon Korman's stuff, find another author. Might I suggest Jules Verne? Very good stuff, and quite timeless I might add.
