This review is from: Wild Bunch [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
I first saw Sam Peckinpah's The Wild Bunch when it came to theaters in 1969. I was in San Diego and had fist met my future wife, was going through counterinsurgency training before my next tour in Vietnam. I was dumbfounded by the intensity of the acting, the violence, but most of all by the story with its ironic twists and the contradictory nature of the main characters. Both greedy and dismissive of the value of life, yet loyal to each other and willing to sacrifice everything for honor (or revenge), these characters are complicated and interesting. After the end of the movie, my future wife and I walked the 32 blocks to her apartment trying to make sense of the movie's outcome and my upcoming tour of duty (my 3rd) in Vietnam. With actors William Holden, Ernest Borgnine, Robert Ryan, Edmond O'Brien, and great character actors Ben Johnson, Jaime Sánchez, Warren Oates, Strother Martin, L.Q. Jones, Bo Hopkins, Dub Taylor and others, this is a man's flick of the highest order. For the characters, the direction, and the memory of some great actors that are now gone from our world (except in movies) The Wild Bunch is a must-have addition to a movie lover's collection.
