This is the book that I learned from when I was young. I have read many outdoor skills book, but this is still by far the best. I tried to get a copy for my kids because the many pictures make it easy to understand but it was out of print and hard to get. It was out of favour for a while because we had "newer materials and technologies now", but I have been in the wilderness where I didn't have those new gadgets handy, and knowing how to get by with what was around me made all the difference. It doesn't just show one way of doing things, it shows several ways, drawn from different parts of the country, so you can choose what works best in your area. I am so glad that it is back in print now, that I am getting copies for all of my outdoors friends.

This is a great reprint of a classic. I spend a lot of time in the wild and lived off grid for most of the years raising my kids, so I discovered a lot of these tips through my own experiences, but I still found this book very valuable in terms of handy tips. I have purchased a few "wildcrafting" books throughout the years and never found one that I really got a lot out of, but this one is very helpful in comparison. I love the historical aspect of it, as I always appreciate the "old ways" being far superior to the high-tech sports approach everyone seems to being going for these days. This book is inspiring to anyone who really wants the quality experience with nature, the full deal with the shivers and the swelter, the dirt and the smoke, the exhaustion and snow-blindness. Specifics on plant identification are marginally useful; better to get a few really good identification books specific to your area, as this section is very general, designed as an introduction to the idea of using wild plants four food and medicine. I found the section on eskimo mitts and snowshoes helpful and have since made my own bindings on my old rawhide snowshoes and two pairs of moose hide mitts according to these instructions. Fun and practical and I absolutely love the old-time illustrations! A good book to curl up with when you're hunkered down in front of the fire, or whiling away the time down at the fishing hole. Enjoy!

This book is very informative. It touches upon all aspects of survival in the woods. Starting with basics of shelter and the finer details including furniture and tools.
There are many diagrams with patterns and measurements to follow which are easy to duplicate. The techniques in this book would be excellent in teaching a survival class to youth or adults.
There are also many nature craft ideas coming from the Native American background. These ideas would do well in a cultural art class.
I have had the chance to see this book in a previous print which was very old. The newer version is quite like the old one and proves to be just as good.

If you can get your hands on this book it will be worth it. This book contains "lost" information that was used during the early days of American exploration and indian occupation on survival techniques, from making stone knives and tomahawks to leather jerkins and wooden canoes--and more, such as how to use "natural" compasses. Very educational.

This book is so clear, so comprehensive, and so packed with drawings, you can't go wrong. It's way beyond a survival or camping book. Lessons on tracking, skinning hides and making buckskin, making packs, making cookware and cooking, how to pack a mule or horse. On and on. The projects will keep me busy for the next year or longer. Love it!

This is the first book I took out of a library c.1952. It is still pivitol in the way I think and do things. Jaeger is most entertaining and inspiring. His illustrations are magic. This is the ultimate book on making things for the right reasons.

This was a great book. It was handed down to me as a child. The information contained is hard to find and extremly useful. A must for everyone interested in surviving and progressing in the wild.

This book is jam packed with useful information for anyone interested in bushcrafting! I absolutely love the patterns/breakdowns of traditional Native clothing. Great stuff!
