Book Description

Feb 1 2009
The best known of the Official War Artists sent to France, Orpen was the only one to publish an extensive memoir of his experiences and observations. He was a talented writer, and his accounts of the last two years of the Great War and the Peace Conference that followed it are vivid, lucid and shrewd. This compelling book was first published in 1921.

First Sentence
One of the great British artists of the first quarter of the twentieth century, Orpen is an intriguing example of a painter who, despite his career as a highly successful portraitist, remained something of an outsider. Read the first page

5.0 out of 5 stars what a nice surprise Sep 30 2005

This artist was recommended to me by a former student. While Orpen is not well known in the States he is apparently quite a big deal across the pond. He is not the most consistent in his quality (re. the war paintings) but when he's on he exhibits all the grace of a first rate painterly realist, something the Brits seem to excel at. I have recommended this book to my colleagues.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not recommended Feb 16 2012

I love Orpen, and if you do as well I suggest you put this purchase off until you have bought the other far superior books. If you are looking for his art this will come woefully short as it is really a specialty book on his period in France with some of his minor artwork. The book is small format and the reproductions adequate. Only recommended for hardcore fans who have everything else. The better purchases are the large monograph with red cover and the catalogue with a yekkow cover and his portrait that accompanied a major retrospective.
