As a first time cake decorator, I thought this pan was fantastic. I wanted to make a homemade cake for my son's first birthday so I bought this cake pan because the dinosaur is super cute and the instructions seemed easy to follow. I was really impressed with how well the cake turned out and it was really easy to make. My cake looked just like the one in the picture. I will definitely be buying another Wilton cake pan for next year's birthday!

I followed the directions and the cake came out of the pan very easily, and it cooked very nice and evenly, and the cake had all of the details that the pan features. My nephew really loved his cake!The only challenge I had was decorating it! I decorated it just like the display--with little star shapes covering the whole cake. My idea was to put a thin layer of icing on the whole cake first--green all over the body, white over the teeth and eyes, etc., just to be sure the whole cake was covered. Then I did stars on top of that. I don't recommend trying that method. You'll end up covering all of the detail (legs/eyes/teeth) with that first layer, which will make it nearly impossible to judge where those details are supposed to go. Secondly, I ended up with almost an inch of icing on the cake, which was too much for me! And I didn't even realize I had so much icing until we cut the cake because it is really tough to judge with a cake like this that isn't completely level. I think you need to do one part at a time when decorating or you will lose track of where the details go...ie: do the eye, then outline it with a dark color, then do the teeth & then outline the mouth, etc. I tried to do all the green parts, then all the white parts, and finished it all before I outlined anything--it made it difficult to find parts to outline later. In the end, I was able to get it to look just like the display. I would use these pans again, but I will change how I decorate it. 4 of 4 people found the following review helpful

This cake is so simple to do, dont let other reviews fool you. All you need is some cake decorating tips and bags or you can make your own bags and you can make this cake in like 30 min. Yes it does take a little time but the results are outstanding!! I've made this cake twice already and it gets faster. Would deffinatly recommed this.

As a first time user with any of these types of pans, I was quite daunted when I realized how much work was going to have to go into this cake. But seriously, if you take your time, follof the directions and TRY to have patience, this cake will turn out wonderfully. And all of your one-year old nephews will love it!The directions say READ BEFORE STARTING but of course, I only glanced at them. It definitely would have helped if I had heeded Wilton's advice and read everything ahead of time. It might have saved me an hour or two. Make sure to grease this pan well. I used Baker's Joy and the cake came right out of the pan. I also did not understand why the instructions told you to ice the whole cake white first as it then disguised the lines to help you decorate. I ended up having to scrape A LOT of that off. Be very sparing when doing that. But besides that, all instructions were easy to follow. I did a few out of order but still got it done and like I said before, it looked great!! Have fun with this DINO! |
