Victoria Wing Chun Club review, Jun 30 2008
This review is from: Wing Chun (DVD)
I have been training in Wing Chun since 1976. This video is both informative and entertaining. The video covers the basic theories of Wing Chun Kung Fu by a well known master Wong Shun Leung who for the most part also gave the late Bruce Lee his Wing Chun foundation. Bruce Lee was the student of Yip Man and Wong Shun Leung was a senior student of Yip Man. The video starts off with a standard Hong Kong choreographed fight between a practitioner fighting in the typical Southern Hung style vs a Wing Chun fighter. This fight is just for entertainment to show visually what the style looks like. After that Wong Shun Leung covers the key ideas of the art illustrating each concept on one of his students. After that he shows the complete "Little Idea Form" which is the key form for Wing Chun. The form is then explained and demonstrated. The pace of the video is good so that the viewer is never bored. After the form Wong Shun Leung demonstrates and explains the most fundamental Wing Chun training exercise known as "Chi Sau" or Sticking Hands. Covered are Single Sticking hands, The "Lap sau" exercise, and double sticking hands along with some attack and defense ideas. Every Wing Chun student should be very familiar with everything on this tape. Also shown is some footwork and kicking. At the end of the tape Wong Shung Leung demonstrates some rapid dummy actions, some long pole and a bit of the knife. These are teasers to advertise other planned volumes in this series but unfortunately were never made due to some financial problems. This video along with Bruce Lee's book on Wing Chun should be in every Wing Chun practitioner's library which is not to say that these are the best ways to learn the art. For more in depth instruction in the Wong Shun Leung lineage, check out Gary Lam's DVD's and various YouTube clips. Every Wing Chun lineage in my opinion has something good to offer. I bought this video when it first came out on tape and at that time it costs $125. For a movie version of Wing Chun check out "The Prodigal Son."

You are not going to learn kung fu by watching a DVD. Spend the cash and go learn it from a professional; proper technique has to be learned from the start in order for a student to progress.

Wong Sheung Leung proved Wing Chun, Jun 5 2004
This review is from: Wing Chun (DVD)
If you don't recognize the man on the front cover, don't fret. He is Wong Sheung Leung, one of the best Wing Chun practitioners of the modern era. He along with a few others, proved Wing Chun on the rooftops of Hong Kong in the 1950s and 1960s. They are the reason that the Hong Kong police department adopted Wing Chun as its official fighting style up until recently (I heard they stopped using it because was to harsh).
This video shows you the basic moves of the first form (Siu Lam Tao), as well as some of the footwork from the second form (Chum Kiu). The one-inch punch is also included. I recommend this video over the videos of some of the others due to its authenticity.
Another plus: Wong Sheung Leung was Bruce Lee's main teacher. In fact, Bruce Lee used to stand in front of his house before class and lie to the other students, telling them that Wong was sick. This allowed Bruce to get private lessons. Upon learning of this, Wong gave Bruce a nice taste of Wing Chun in action.
May he rest in peace, and his legacy of excellence live on.
