Review

"If the book simply stayed right there in the realm of how-to, go-to advice, it would be a wonderful book indeed. But it crosses the line from useful to inspire because David opens up much more than his camera bag. He opens his considerable heart and mind, both of which belong to a masterful storyteller driven by an acute sympathy for the human condition, coupled with an intense curiosity and respect for both the differences and the sameness of the world." -Joe McNally, photographer, author of The Hot Shoe Diaries and The Moment It Clicks "David does something here that few have ever done--he not only shows his absolutely captivating images, he shows the thought process behind those images, as well as how to start capturing the types of images we all long to take. People will be talking about this book for years to come. It's that good!" -Scott Kelby, photographer, author, President of the National Association of Photoshop Professionals

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read, May 16 2009
By E. Wilson (Port Colborne, Ontario, Canada) - See all my reviews

I love this book. It works on so many levels. There are so many books on photography out there about the 'how'. Finally a book about the 'why'. Within The Frame appeals to both the geek and the artist in me. And manages to put every other aspect of photography into perspective. With a firm grasp on vision (the 'why')... everything else becomes clearer.

The book itself is gorgeous. Filled with some of my favourite photographs. Kudos to Peachpit Press for making such a beautiful book. I have two of David's prints hanging on my walls, so I was curious to see the print quality. It's really very good. Also loving the square format!

5.0 out of 5 stars Passionately written; the Tao of Photography, Jun 15 2009
By Justin Van Leeuwen "jvlphoto.com" (Ottawa, ON) - See all my reviews

I've read a lot of books about Photoshop, cameras, and lighting - all of which dealing with a very technical end of taking photos and tinkering with images. Within the Frame deals more with the Why, than the how.

Half-way through the read you begin to truly understand that you're not reading a book specifically about how to take a picture, you probably have a pretty good idea on how to do that already, really what DuChemin gets into is how HE takes photos - slow down, pre-visualize, meet people, experience cultures.

His photographic "theory" can be applied every day, if you want to change your frame of mind into a more zen: see the world as it really is, behind the veil of assumption that clouds our own process.

He's got a great batch of images in here too - really makes you want to travel to these accessibly exotic locations (David leads workshops once or twice a year) - and he'll even tell you how he took them; right down to the f/stop. That doesn't mean you'll be able to mimic them though, unless you take the advice.

The reader is left with the feeling that they've been given good advice from a friend; recommendations on how to approach taking better photos, ones with greater impact, without bogging you down with camera menus - that's what the manual is for. WTF is something for those aspring to do more, but feel they're half way to getting there - you don't need the best gear; just vision.

Within the Frame doesn't stop with the book though; I'm a loyal subscriber to David's blog: The Pixelated Image at [...]
