This book had a great start with many in-depth characters. The plot setup was good, set in a medevial type world with wizards. About half way through, though, it seems that Cook abandons all exposition and hops from crisis to crisis with little background detail. "They walked 300 miles, eating fish along the way. They then sacked Troy." It seemed like the first half of the book contained 1/30th of all the action in the book, but 95% of all character development. It is a good read, but if he tripled the length of the book by fleshing out the 2nd half of the book with the same type of detail found in the 1st half of the book he would have had an epic.
I totally recommend getting this if you can find it at a good price.

Wow, this book is great. I have read a lot of fantasy books, but this one tops my list as one of the all time greats. The story was absolutely enthralling, the characters were some of the most lifelike characters I have ever read, if it weren't for the fact that I had to turn the page I would have thought them real. Cook did an excellent job at weaving a tale of high fantasy. I recommend this book to anyone out there who likes fantasy novels or if they think these novels are just toys of a bad imagination, then they should read this book, I believe it will change their perspective on how they view fantasy fiction books.

HASH(0xa3c1dfd8) out of 5 stars Absolutely wonderful March 28 2013

Format: Mass Market Paperback
This is my favorite fantasy novel. I've probably read it two dozen times over the years. The characters are great though many of them are a little too extreme in their beliefs and stereotypical. The magic is very cool and much of it is original. I can't recommend it highly enough. Really great stuff.
HASH(0xa3c96f0c) out of 5 stars Exceptional and unique Sept. 8 2015
By Nate Mason - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Mass Market Paperback
My favorite book of all time, and I have read more than a few. It is very much unlike traditional fantasy works - all of the characters are complex and morally ambiguous, there is no one-dimensional "protagonist" per se, character development is superb, and it paints a world both colorful and dark. The way magic is conceived is very original (the sleeping secrets, bartering for extended lifespans, wizards passing on portions of their consciousness and powers to others at death), and the cosmology/metaphysics behind the story is fascinating and only hinted at (rocks can dream?). It is gritty and humorous without being crass and sensationalist like Game of Thrones. Also, the author's writing style and use of language is truly unique. I rarely re-read books but this one I have read at least ten times. Hugh Cook was an underappreciated genius, and tragically died too early.

Consider a simple line from the first page: "It was Phyphor's birthday. He was 5,734 years old. He saw no cause to celebrate." Awesome!

Wonderful fantasy novel followed by many more. This one is the best but the others are good too. Highly recommend this to anyone looking for a new series to bite into.

HASH(0xa3a4d3c0) out of 5 stars many better books to read than this Oct. 29 2013
By croaka - Published on Amazon.com

I felt compelled to write a review when I stumbled across this even though I hadn't read this book in many years and never will read it again. After an intriguing opening with some clever ideas, imagery, and humor, the book quickly degrades into predictability and bad fantasy tropes. Worst of all, it became boring.
