- Warranty is meaningless. - Purchased August 2012; Now 7 days left of 1 year hardware 'warranty'. - Unit performance started decreasing (dropping Internet) about 3 months ago. Received 1 'courtesy' tech call (no charge), process to correct corrupt bios; - I have had to 'flash' the bios now about ten or more times to re-activate the unit. It has been dropping Internet and steadily increasing in frequency until last instance where the unit would not respond period. - Called Netgear for authorization to return under warranty. They would not accept a return without performing diagnosis attempt(s) over the phone (they want the customer to perform warranty diagnosis!). - If unable to re-activate an obviously flakey router then authorization for return would be issued. If they could get it going again then a (stressed MINIMUM) charge of $40 (implied probably greater) + shipping. - Consideration: If they could have re-activated I would still have a flakey unit, no warranty and be out the service charge. Unit costs ~ $150. Guess what? Replacement is NOT going to be a Netgear! Some warranty!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best bet in a dual band router Sept. 8 2012
Verified Purchase
I have been looking for an easy to install wireless router with high speed and good range. This Netgear router fills the bill. It does 450 on both 2.4 and 5 bands.

Streaming video works well. Good connectivity two floors up.

The one other requirement was connection to my MacBook Pro's Time Machine backup. Apparently this router will enable Time Machine to connect to a USB connected HD. In my case I have a Iomega StorCenter which is a network connected device. Time Machine is working with it. The first backup is 95 GB and will take about 20 hours.

All in all, one of the best dual band routers on the market.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very easy and extremely fast! July 16 2012
Verified Purchase
Firmware version: V1.0.1.38_2.1.17.1
Setup date: July 16, 2012
Update date: November 26, 2013

Update:
Product has been working great for the past year and a bit. Has been plugged in and running constantly since my initial purchase. Updates have come from Netgear very frequently and addressed quite a number of the original issues that shipped with the router. Absolutely no complaints with this router and would definitely purchase it again.

The good:
Product instructions were extremely easy to follow.
Initial set-up was instantaneous and I was immediately connected to the internet.
Advanced settings for tailoring exactly what you want.
Supports Wireless Repeating, Advanced QoS, Remote Management.
Accessing all of my files from anywhere in the world.
Guest Network is easy and fast to set up.
Looks great, very futuristic.
Traffic metering supports alerts and keeps very good track of bandwidth usage.
Automatically detects when it needs new firmware and prompts on web console (possible in genie too but I didn't see it).
Supports DynDNS.
Free 90 day basic phone support through Netgear. (Haven't checked it yet but was a feature in registering)

The bad:
Software genie provides no extra functionality over the web console.
While the stand is fairly large, it is still slightly top heavy and can fairly easily be knocked over.
No VPN settings that I have been able to find as of yet.
By default 2.4GHz channel is set to only 217MB/s and you must manually crank it up to 450MB/s.
The ethernet cable included was brutally bent.
Immediately after setting up the router you are sent to register your router and the form fails numerous times and must be tricked into accepting your info.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing range, Reliable Connections, Amazing Speeds April 28 2012
By KGK
I bought this AP/Router as a replacement for a previous product whose wireless stopped working. I took the leap on this more expensive model (vs. the N600) in order to try out the claims of faster and farther wireless. I must say I was impressed. Wireless connections to this device work where none of my previous APs could reach. In one case this AP reaches and connects to wireless devices better than an AP from another manufacturer in the same room. The simultaneous dual band operation is also pretty nice. I can reserve one band for all the high speed applications (like video streaming), while the other band is used for normal uses. But as it turns out, both bands are more than capable of streaming video at the same time. Recommend this product highly - would buy another one and just may to replace another AP/router that is still working, but just does not have the same performance.

1.0 out of 5 stars it diserves no stars April 15 2013

it did not work
it was a brick
it cost a days labor, with no result to to show for it
I plug in the competition ( a author router that my boy lent me) and that worked right a way.
I'm disappointed with "Wndr4500 N900 Wl Dual Band Gigabit Router" from Netgear.
