Review

'Narrated by Low with all the gritty, down-to-earth realism that breathed such life into his first novel, and shows just why historical fiction is one of today's most rapidly-growing genres' Yorkshire Evening Post Praise for The Whale Road 'A company of warriors, desperate battles, an enthralling read' Bernard Corwell 'A fantastic book, one of the best I have read for years. There's a wonderful earthiness to proceedings and he creates a tangible sense of being there. There's a sturdy, lyrical and epic quality about the writing which makes it feel like the kind of saga a Viking would recount in his old age' Simon Scarrow 'A stirring Viking series of blockbuster battles and religious intrigue' Publishing News 'All the right ingredients are firmly in place!above all there is the storyline itself; told in an earthy, rough-and-ready stylewhich perfectly compliments this saga for the 21st Century' Yorkshire Evening Post 'A fascinating read' The Glasgow Herald 'The Hangman humour of the band of sworn brothers gives Low's epic but brutal tale real humanity and the detail of 10th century life is wonderfully vivd. The action is fast and furious!shockingly believably so. Low's debut novel hits the mark with maximum impact' Bridlington Today

Product Description

The gripping sequel to The Whale Road , charting the adventures of the Oathsworn, a band of Vikings looking for the return of the Rune Sword that will lead them to Attila's Hoard A band of brothers, known as the Oathsworn, committed only to each other, feared by many, rises again, setting sail on the wolf sea in search of vengeance and glory. Washed up in a hostile city, battle-weary and out of luck, the Oathsworn lie waiting for their reluctant leader, the young Orm, to bring them back once more to wealth and warfare. But Orm's prized sword, the legendary Rune Serpent, is gone, stolen by the rapacious Starkad, and with it the runes writ upon the hilt that only Orm can decipher. The Oathsworn embark on a dangerous mission to reclaim their precious sword as they pursue the elusive Starkad across the turbulent wolf sea. Unafraid to fight and cunning in the ways of men, they wreak violence and bloody revenge on their enemies. Caught up in the treacherous battles in the East between the rulers of Constantinople, aided by hordes of Viking mercenaries, and the Arabs, their adventures will take them from Greece to Jerusalem, across the treacherous wolf sea where only the hunting hungry dare set sail. Epic adventure broad in scope and bloody in action, The Wolf Sea is a stunning follow-up to Robert Low's debut The Whale Road.

4.0 out of 5 stars A vast improvement on the first!,, May 11 2009
By B.K.Price "Fantasy Doctor" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Wolf Sea (Hardcover)
Now this is a much better work by Low, his first novel The Whale Road had a few major teething problems, the writing wasn't as good as some of the major players in the historical fiction world. Now this novel brings the reader into the world of the Vikings and the early Medieval era, you can really get a sense of what it must be like to have lived in this time, the wars and religious turmoil of the time.

In this novel we see Orm as captain of the remaining Othsworn, not long after his escape from the Steppes he finds himself in trouble after having the great sword of Attila stolen. This finds himself and his warriors traveling half way around the world from Greece to Antioch on to Jerusalem fighting in Greeks, Turks and slavers. Will Orm the bear slayer survive to hold the sword of Atilla or will he and his warriors be drinking in Odin's hall come battles end?

If you like historical fiction then give this book a go, the series has a lot of promise. The third book in this series has just come out, I can wait to read it.

This review is from: The Wolf Sea (Hardcover)
In the Wolf Sea, we continue the adventures of Orm Rurikson and his Oathsworn as they make their way to Miklagard (Constantinople as the Vikings knew it) and compete with their arch rival Starkad, who's shocking destiny is revealed in the end. Low does an excellent job describing the death of the old gods at the hands of christianity, a theme that is appropriately conveyed in the first 2-books of the series. I don't want to give away too much of this very enjoyable book. This is good historical fiction where the characters are fictitious and the times and places are brought back to life with compelling detail. Robert Low does his historical homework, and the result is a high quality Viking tale. I have his 3rd book "The White Raven" on the way...can't wait.

5.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down..., Jun 20 2008
By Bookie "Insufferable bore" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Wolf Sea (Hardcover)
Picked this one up at the library on a whim and was pleasantly surprised. Awesome, swashbuckling tale. Great characters. Surprising twists of fate. The historical backdrop of the East-West versions of Christianity competing for converts was particularly interesting.

Check out the author's website. He actually participates in Viking-style reenactments. One wonders how many of his real comrades inspired members of the Oathsworn.

The best part is, the second book in the series has recently been released!
