Phoenix - Wolfgang Amadeus.,
By
This review is from: Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix (Audio CD)
Phoenix - Wolfgang Amadeus PhoenixThe opening track 'Lisztomania' sets the tone for Wolfgang Amadeus , the latest release from the group Phoenix: lush guitars with dance beats and falsetto vocals. All of the songs are well crafted. Phoenix's newest album does what a good album does; it sucks you in, and makes you want to dance. You know it's Phoenix when you're listening to it. You have the Rhythm Guitar of the previous album It's Never Been Like That, but also nods to the disco-esce sound heard even farther back in the catalogue. There's nothing radically new, just more of what we loved in the past, only done a bit better. '1901' is by far their catchiest single to date. I can already see 'Lasso' is going to be the most underrated song of the album, buried in the middle of the album. 'Fences' feels the most like old Phoenix, but doesn't outshine the newer synth heavy tracks. The only negative feedback to say with the album is that the tracks don't have the cohesion of previous albums. Wolfgang feels more like a collection of hidden gems than a completely new album. Launching the album off with the unstoppable power of a jet turbine, this album works not only to make one of the strongest musical statements of the year, but also allow the it to unfold and prove itself as a cohesive set of songs rather than a piece of work defined by its singles.

About the only bad thing one can say about this solid CD is the artwork on the cover. Pure, pop, genius! A must buy for all!
