Book Description

With The Hidden World, Alison Baird introduced young readers to Maeve O'Connor and the parallel world of Annwn. In The Wolves of Woden, we meet Maeve's grandmother, Jean MacDougall.

It is 1940 and Europe is engulfed by war. Fifteen-year-old Jean is filled with the same anxiety that plagues the rest of the British colony of Newfoundland - loved ones have left to fight abroad, and invasion is an ever-present threat. On a visit to a remote village with her family, Jean wanders off and is magically transported to a mysterious realm. Befriended by Princess Gwenlian and Druid Laloken, Jean finds herself in the middle of an invasion of Annwn by a tribe of Norsemen known as the Lochlannach. When she flees in terror, Jean discovers that she is back in Newfoundland.

Whenever her anxieties about the war get the best of her, Jean finds herself re-entering the hidden world she has discovered. With every visit, she becomes more involved in the intrigues of Annwn, and before long has joined Princess Gwenlian's perilous quest to save her realm.

THE VISION CAME TO JEAN IN THE early hours of the morning, when the sky outside her window was still night-blue, and the birds in the trees around the house had begun to chirp intermittently, but not yet to sing. Read the first page

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW an amazing book . . ., July 20 2004
This review is from: Wolves Of Woden (Paperback)
This is definetly one of the best books i've read in a long time. I couldn't put it down. I stayed up all night reading it. Alison Baird is a writer that really makes tou feel the emotions the characters are experiencing and pulls you into the world of Annwn. It is full of mystery, suspence, fear, curiosity, and romance. Just the right amount of these ingredients make for a great book. A must read for certain.
10 thumbs up !!!!!!!!!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars S'ok, Oct 8 2002

This review is from: Wolves Of Woden (Paperback)
I found this book to be highly enjoyable and very well written but I still had several pet peeves surrounding some very brief scenes. For instance, it inaccurately depicts witches and pagans as rather barbaric, crude and evil. It also becomes rather "hokey" and monotonous in several slumps during the middle and end. I also found it rather inadequate intellectually. A nice rainy day read however and I give it a good mark.
