Book Description
With
The Hidden World, Alison Baird introduced young readers to Maeve O'Connor and the parallel world of Annwn. In
The Wolves of Woden, we meet Maeve's grandmother, Jean MacDougall.
It is 1940 and Europe is engulfed by war. Fifteen-year-old Jean is filled with the same anxiety that plagues the rest of the British colony of Newfoundland - loved ones have left to fight abroad, and invasion is an ever-present threat. On a visit to a remote village with her family, Jean wanders off and is magically transported to a mysterious realm. Befriended by Princess Gwenlian and Druid Laloken, Jean finds herself in the middle of an invasion of Annwn by a tribe of Norsemen known as the Lochlannach. When she flees in terror, Jean discovers that she is back in Newfoundland.
Whenever her anxieties about the war get the best of her, Jean finds herself re-entering the hidden world she has discovered. With every visit, she becomes more involved in the intrigues of Annwn, and before long has joined Princess Gwenlian's perilous quest to save her realm.
