The young and beautiful Sada Abe (Junko Miyashita), the daughter of a rich merchant, is banished for losing her virginity after being raped by a college student. Sada wanders the city, becoming a geisha and eventually meeting Kichizo (Hideaki Ezumi), a posh restaurateur who falls under her spell. Together, they embark on a week-long sexual escapade filled with dangerous obsessions. Their complete descent into each others desires culminates in a shocking crime of passion which captures the city's headlines. Based on a real event from 1936, "A Woman Called Sada Abe" is a compelling adult drama from Japan's famed Nikkatsu Studios and director Noboru Tanaka.

1.0 out of 5 stars This is not in the realm of the senses!, Jun 13 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Woman Called Sada Abe, a (DVD)
This is based on the same true story as IN THE REALM OF THE SENSES. This version is like a B porno movie with lots of acting and movement which is covered and hidden by a kimona. Even worse, the DVD goes in a jerky assembly of still shots rather than a true "motion picture." The acting, costumes and sets are less visually appealing than IN THE REALM OF THE SENSES. If you want to experience a truely erotic tale of a woman with unquenchable lust buy In THE REALM OF THE SENSES, otherwise... save your money.

4.0 out of 5 stars An interesting contrast to the oshima original, July 2 2001
By joe gallagher - Published on Amazon.com
Though less arty than the oshima classic, this erotic tale of l'amour fou is a stunning film in its own right. You get much more of the lead characters life. Its beautifully made, well acted. It's also less hermetic than oshima's masterpiece, making less artistic, but a little easier to watch and enjoy. Higherly recommended for fans of classic Japanese erotic cinema!
