Product Description

Pam Grier (Jackie Brown) joins a group of sexy, young female prisoners in their struggle against a sadistic warden in BIG DOLL HOUSE. This shockingly real film is perhaps one of the most influential of all women-in-prison films! Also starring Judy Brown, Roberta Collins (Death Race 2000) and Sid Haig (House Of 1,000 Corpses). Directed by Jack Hill (Spider Baby, Foxy Brown). Innocent Carol Jeffries (Jennifer Gan, Naked Angels) is framed by her drug-dealing boyfriend and ends up in a tough prison in the Philippines jungle in WOMEN IN CAGES. She must face off against the sadistic warden, Alabama (Grier), who takes great pleasure in alternately seducing and torturing her prisoners. Also starring Judy Brown and Roberta Collins. Directed by Gerry De Leon (Mad Doctor Of Blood Island). Inside the hellish women's prison called THE BIG BIRD CAGE, inmates like Terry (Anitra Ford, The Price Is Right) struggles to survive. They get their chance to escape when scheming revolutionary Blossom (Pam Grier) engineers a prison break . . . from the outside in. Also starring Carol Speed (Abby). Directed by Jack Hill.

For fans of '70s exploitation and women-in-prison flicks, Shout Factory's "Women in Cages" collection is a fun diversion that is well-assembled. We get three Roger Corman films from 1971-72 all shot in the Phillipines starring Pam Grier and other nubile honeys.

"The Big Doll House" features lots of torture scenes, fun performances from slimy Sid Haig (his scenes with Grier are priceless), and an almost unrecognizable Pat Woodell (the original Bobbie-Jo from the black-and-white "Petticoat Junction").

The best of the trilogy is "The Big Bird Cage" which throws more humor into the mix and the result is even more entertaining. The gay Phillipino prison guards are hysterical, as is the way the women shamelessly proclaim their sexual frustration (When they finally do get their hands on a man, he's forced at knifepoint to "Get it up, or I'll cut it off!"). The dialogue in this one just gets better with lines like ""You can't rape me, I love sex" and "Never mind the crotch cooties...they have to eat too!". And when an inmate slathers chicken fat all over her naked body so she can literally slip past the guards, "The Big Bird Cage" soars into camp movie heaven!

"Women In Cages" has Pam Grier in Sybil Danning-mode as the evil prison matron, rather than an inmate, and the results are not as good. The film seems to suffer from a smaller budget too, and despite encore performances from Roberta Collins and Judy Brown, isn't as fun as the first two flicks. I'd recommend watching "Women in Cages" first and saving the earlier but superior flicks til last.

There's a lengthy documentary about all three films featuring interviews with many of the actors and actresses that is worthwhile viewing as well as original trailers and TV spots. The picture quality is very good.

The Woman in Prison sub-genre has been an all-time favorite with low-budget production film-makers. The recipee is quite simple. Get yourself a load of starlets that have no problem with semi-nudity, arrange them in a simple prison setting and you are in business.

"Experts" will tell you that these movies are made to bring out conflicting emotions in men. These contradictory feelings are supposed to create strong sexually induced sensations. Two classic dualities, namely the "Rapist and the protector" or the "Good husband and the voyeur" are used ad nauseam in those early 70s productions. To make a decent WIP film, you need nudity, some sexual torture, a tough warden (male or female), a catfight (mandatory), a drug addict, somebody that was sent to jail for an unfair reason, a bitchy cellmate and loads of very short prison outfits. These are watered-down versions of the ones made in Europe. Little to no nudity is shown and violence is kept to a minimum. Even "Woman in Cages", the most hardcore one, will be pale in comparison with the real grindhouse stuff that was made in Italy or Asia. Technically, the movies are OK. The only exception is the sound quality which is sometime muffled. All Actresses look alike (some are featured in 2 movies) and are (as required) very pretty. The WIP mandatory scenes are kind of "forced" into the scenario. The Mud wrestling stint is as predictable as possible. There is nothing original about these mild renditions of the sub-genre. True WIP fans will find them weak.

The extras are pretty cool and add a lot of substance to this set. I cannot give anything less than 3.5 stars as YOU GET WHAT YOU PAID FOR.

As a point of entry, these flicks are OK for newbie to the genre. A No-shock introductory level triple-header. I am not a fan of the WIP style, so the "B-Movie bum" that I am, found the movies repetitive, pointless.......... and entertaining

I bought this dvd in July and just watched it - missed the 30 day return limit for defective products. The second disc (Doll House) was not playable on my player or the computer. Make sure that you check out the dvd's when they arrive.

I enjoyed the two movies on the first dvd and they represent the trashy chic movies for that period. Low budget, mediocre acting but fun nonetheless
