During and following World War II, women's magazines served as advice manuals, fashion guides, marriage counselors, and catalogs. This thematically arranged collection of selections from Ladies' Home Journal, Woman's Home Companion, McCall's, Redbook, and others provides a resource for understanding how the popular press perceived and attempted to influence women's values, goals, and behavior in the postwar era.

I found this to be an excellent book in my research of Womens Magazines. The References are reliable and provide a good jumping off point. The information is concise and easy to read. The articles are also very insight and some even amusing. I would only wish they provided images of the original articles.

5.0 out of 5 stars Women's Magazines Review Jan 15 2012
By Venita Jane Hise - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This is an excellent text which illustrates the evolution of women's perceived roles in mid 20th century America. As women grew from their roles as housewives and mothers into the more demanding combination of housewives, mothers, and career women, the struggle to find recognition and validation as intellectual equals with men was daunting. This look back at the way women were portrayed through various marketing techniques doesn't give an entirely accurate accounting of the abilities or limitations of women in that era, but it goes a long way toward showing what advertisers (primarily men at that time) thought about women's lives and preferences.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating Read Jan 7 2013

This book is so engaging. It takes a very detailed look at Women's Magazines of the post WWII era into the decade of the sixties. Besides a wonderful overview of the genre during this time period there are fascinating excerpts reprinted from many of the most popular magazine covering all sorts of subjects. There are also wonderfully interesting reprints of ads that appeared in these magazines. A worthy read.
