From carpenters to artisans, the choices are plentiful when it comes to working with wood. How to decide? Pick up this comprehensive, portable reference including details on selecting and using more than 200 species of wood from around the world. Richly illustrated with over 400 photos and 200 drawings, each species gets full attention with its own photo, plus in-depth information on the wood’s working properties, seasoning requirements, typical uses, and safety considerations. Special emphasis is given to wood figure and defects, as well as health hazards of working with certain woods. Drawings of the tree, leaf, flower, and fruit of most of the species are also included. Along with 200 full descriptions, another 200 species are handily listed in brief. Concise and informative, this is a great go-to (and “take it with you”) resource for anyone working with wood at home or out in the field.

1.0 out of 5 stars Tiny Type Jun 25 2012
By Key Images - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Compact is right. The very small type makes for difficult reading. If you are looking for a biology lesson, this book is for you. I purchsed this book to be a field companion to my larger book, Identifying Wood by Hoadley but the example images are very small and only of long grain that appear finished. For identifying unfinished wood in the field, I found this book to be of no value.

3.0 out of 5 stars Have a magnifying glass handy... May 1 2012

I just bought this book and I was surprised at how tiny the type is. I saw the Preface and thought, "Geez this is small," then I turned the page and realized it's tiny throughout!!! I'm in my 40's and don't have a eyesight issue, but this is the smallest text I've seen in a book. *Note to the Publisher- Larger font, Less leading! I don't want to return this because it looks like an otherwise awesome book, but it is annoyingly difficult to read! The page numbers are big and bold however which makes no sense...

I thought this book would cover more species in detail. It only have a few and the rest where listed like an index.
