5.0 out of 5 stars Vintage Hill, May 26 2012

(HALL OF FAME)    (TOP 10 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This review is from: The Woodcutter (Paperback)
The great British detective-mystery writer, Reginald Hill, has in the closing years of his illustrious literary career, turned to composing individual novels. No more the charming and inimitable sleuthing of that famous detective tandem Daziel and Pascoe to capture the imagination, tickle the senses, and guide us through to an effective resolution. Instead, the reader now faces tales based on a more modern treatment of lives victimized by criminal circumstances outside their control. His latest work, "The Woodcutter", is one story that traces the life of a Cumbrian man, Wolf Hadda, as he rises from obscurity as a woodcutter's son to becoming a very wealthy businessman who, then, suddenly loses it all and is sent to prison on charges that looked suspiciously framed. In his typically meticulous search for the truth behind the inexplicable reversal of fortunes, Hill takes us through a baffling maize of twists and turns that explores all kinds of relationships that Wolf has developed over the years inside and outside the prison walls. Wolf is one of those unique characters who leave a very special impression on others because of their charm, grace, and determination to succeed. However, someone in that throng of school chums, ex-wife, girl friends, in-laws, lawyer-partner, and prison officials has it in for Hadda. It will take the full length of this novel to understand why Wolf is not who you might think he is and how he has become unwittingly ensnared in a most sinister international conspiracy. True to his penchant for detail and sleuthing qualities, Hill has to pursue every rabbit trail in the search for the larger truth because, as in life, so in fiction, the web of entangling lies invariably entangles more than just a couple of bad operators. Oh, yes, there is redemption at the end but only for those who have the patience to make it through all the challenges along the way.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really enjoyable read, Mar 10 2012

I have read most of Reginald Hill's books - and this has been one of my favorites. It's very fast-paced, and the characters and story-line are so well written that you forget you're reading a fictional story. I loved getting lost in it!

5.0 out of 5 stars I couldn't put it down, Jan 5 2011

I took this book with me on a winter holiday, and read it all the way, some of the pages even a few times. It's a beautiful story, incredibly believable, while the characters are so alive, each one different from another, you have the feelings that you can see and touch them. The main character, Wolf, is so lovable, in spite of his faults and sometimes lack of manners. I have read almost all R. Hill's books, but this one is amongst his best. I just can't believe that he can right so good; you cannot see that it's a made up story, really feels very much written from experience (although I suspect not). Don't miss to read it.
