First Sentence
If I were fully conscious of my surroundings at this moment, I would describe the light through the miniblinds, the way it searches out the apples in the glass bowl, buffing them to an unnatural sheen. Read the first page

5.0 out of 5 stars How to write with the rigth words, Feb 18 2010
By
This review is from: Word Painting (Paperback)
If you write and think that you know how to write--think again. Word painting is going to set you straight--you won't believe what you didn't know.Proper description is going to take your level of writing from amateur to professional. This book explains it all: it takes you from observing and using your inner eye to getting it down on paper; it explains how to use your nose, mouth, hand and ear;bringing characters to life;how point of view affects discription;descriptions of settings;and how discription shapes the narrative line and much, much more.
The core of good writing is description, and that's called Word Painting.

Toward More Picturesque Language

Just as all boats rise with the tide, Ms. McClanahan's book, Word Painting, has the power to elevate the writing process for all those who would apply her insight and skillful direction. I intend to have it at my elbow as I write. It is a valuable resource - not only for me, but I will be happy to pass its precepts on to my students.

1.0 out of 5 stars Severely bloated, Feb 17 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Word Painting (Paperback)
I have read other books that have a chapter covering description that are very concise. I guess I was hoping to get more of the same from Word Painting. Instead there is so much rambleing it is hard to pick out the key points. I don't have time to read random observations and at nearly 250 pages I bet you don't either. I would much rather talk a walk in the rain.
