Book Description

with a preface by George Miller WordNet, an electronic lexical database, is considered to be the most important resource available to researchers in computational linguistics, text analysis, and many related areas. Its design is inspired by current psycholinguistic and computational theories of human lexical memory. English nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs are organized into synonym sets, each representing one underlying lexicalized concept. Different relations link the synonym sets. The purpose of this volume is twofold. First, it discusses the design of WordNet and the theoretical motivations behind it. Second, it provides a survey of representative applications, including word sense identification, information retrieval, selectional preferences of verbs, and lexical chains.Contributors : Reem Al-Halimi, Robert C. Berwick, J. F. M. Burg, Martin Chodorow, Christiane Fellbaum, Joachim Grabowski, Sanda Harabagiu, Marti A. Hearst, Graeme Hirst, Douglas A. Jones, Rick Kazman, Karen T. 5.0 out of 5 stars The most comprehensive overview of WordNet, Nov 1 2011
This review is from: WordNet: An Electronic Lexical Database (Hardcover)
I'm currently analyzing WordNet's semantic structure and informatic formalization. This book helped and guided me in my understanding of this database.

This collection of articles written by many of WordNet's conceptors offers great insights about why they chose an approach over another and what are the expected limitations of their model.

5.0 out of 5 stars An explicit expose exploring semantic relations, Feb 8 2001

Woody Haynes (Chicago, IL USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: WordNet: An Electronic Lexical Database (Hardcover)
WordNet, the book, is a must to anyone who wants to use or learn about WordNet the semantic network/lexicon. The early chapeters of the book discuss the strategies and treatment of the various parts-of-speech by the development project. The later chapters are contributions of researchers that have applied the database to various investigations.

WordNet, the database. is free for non-commercial purposes and comes with a simple viewer and software that can be adapted to your own use. As such, it is (in my opinion) the finest free lexocographic resource available.

You shouldn't think about buying the book until you have played with the database. But if you do and want to know more about its development and uses (and you don't feel like finding libraries with 10 year old obscure journal articles), this book is for you.

The book is a great collection of articles about the WordNet project. It is a excellent resource of information for those who want to work with or develop a wordnet like database. For NLP researchers or linguistics it is also a great and pleasure reading.
